TOLEDO, OH - Head Coach Stan Joplin announced the signing today of 6-6 forward Anton Currie (Okemos, MI - Okemos) to attend the University of Toledo.
Currie averaged 16.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game for Okemos High School and led the Chieftains to a 23-2 win-loss mark and a Class A regional championship berth. Currie also helped Okemos win the Capital Circuit crown and a No. 9 state ranking. He was ranked as the No. 3 wing forward in the state of Michigan by Prep Spotlight magazine.
"Anton just turned 17 years old and possesses a tremendous upside," said Joplin. "He's a good athlete who will be able to do a lot of things for us. (Assistant coach) Bob Simon first spotted him and then I went and saw him play and we both liked what we saw. We believe he has a very bright future."
Currie joins previously signed recruits Kareem Milson and Sammy Villegas along with three newcomers who sat out last season for the Rockets: guard Keith Triplett, and forwards Ricardo Thomas and Robert Sanders. Triplett sat out due to NCAA academic rules, Thomas sat out his transfer season after attending one year at Eastern Kentucky and Sanders elected to redshirt. Sophomore center A.J. Shellabarger, who elected to sit out last year after playing as a freshman in 1999-2000, also will be back for the Rockets.
Toledo was 22-11 last season, the most wins for the school since the 1979-80 season. The Rockets also earned their second NIT berth in the last three seasons.
