Toledo (19-15, 5-4 MAC) couldn't overcome a five-run fifth inning by Eastern Michigan (11-21, 8-4 MAC) in its 7-5 setback this evening to the Eagles at Oestrike Stadium.
The Rockets held a 3-2 advantage entering the fifth inning, but EMU strung together four straight hits followed by two Rocket errors for a 7-3 advantage.
Sophomore SS J.D. Foust provided UT with its first run of the game with a solo shot to right center leading off the third. Junior CF Tony Miller and freshman C Mitch Maier added RBI singles later in the inning to give the Rockets a 3-1 lead.
Toledo added single runs in the sixth (on junior RF Jay Juras' RBI single) and eighth (on Juras' solo homer) innings for its final scoring.
The Rockets sent the tying run to the plate in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings but were unable to capitalize. UT left nine men on base in the contest.
Senior RHP Shawn Wilson (3-3) took the loss for the Rockets, while EMU's Joe Linde (5-4) registered the win.
Sophomore LHP Mike DeLong provided the Rockets with solid relief. He struck out five Eagles in 3.2 innings and allowed just three hits and one unearned run.
The two teams continue their four-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. The series finale takes place on Sunday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m.
