The University of Toledo men's swimming and diving team finished in third place at the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Rockets totaled 520.50 points. Miami won the event with 776.50 points.
Toledo's relay teams fared especially well, winning two of five events and finishing third in two other events. UT's 400 medley relay team of Tim McCann (North Canton, OH - Hoover), Ben Wainwright (Hudsonville, MI - Hudsonville), Thomas Ehrhardt (Darmstadt, Germany-Bertolt-Brecht) and Paul Southey (Gauseng, South Africa - Pretoria) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:18.40. The NCAA B-standard time to provisionally qualify is 3:18.77. Toledo's 200 relay medley team, composed of the same four swimmers as the 400 medley
relay, set a new pool record in finishing first with a time of 1:30.14. The previous mark of 1:30.38 was set in 1992 by Eastern Michigan. The Rocekey relay teams placed third in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
McCann and Southey led Toledo in the individual events. The Rocket duo placed first and second in the 100 backstroke, with McCann winning the event with a time of 49.70, while Southey finished in 50.25. McCann also won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.34. Southey placed second in the 50 freestyle (20.47) and third in the 100 freestyle (45.05).
Both McCann and Southey were named to the All-MAC first team. This is the second straight year in which McCann has earned first-team honors and the third consecutive year in which Toledo has placed two or more swimmers on the All-MAC first team.
