Last Time Out
Toledo led early against Michigan State but ended up falling to the Spartans, 5-4.

UT started the game about as well as one could have hoped, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Toledo extended its lead to 4-0 in the third inning, but that would be the last run for the Rockets. Michigan State scored runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to pull ahead and secure the victory.

Junior Ross Adolph drove in two runs on a triple in the first inning, while senior Dalton Bollinger accounted for the other two RBIs. Freshman Bryce Davis started on the mound and was fantastic, throwing four shutout innings. All told, UT used seven pitchers on Wednesday.

Hatfield, Shutes Earn Recognitions
Freshman Trace Hatfield was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Hatfield led the Rockets in nearly every offensive category last week. He hit .471 (8-for-17), drove in four runs, and slugged .765 over Toledo's four games, leading the team in each statistical metric. In the series against Eastern Michigan he hit his first career home run on Friday, went 4-for-4 on Saturday, and made a highlight-reel diving catch on Sunday.

Rocket Notes
  • Toledo is slugging .460 at home this season, and its pitchers are holding opponents to a .225 batting average at Scott Park.
  • Hatfield is the fifth freshman in the MAC this season to earn a weekly award. NIU's Michael Lasiewicz (2X), Miami's Parker Massman, Ohio's Aaron Levy, and Ball State's Drey Jameson are the others.
  • Austin Calopietro has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances, dating back to March 18 against Cincinnati. He has thrown 13.2 innings during that time with 20 strikeouts, and opponents are hitting .136 against him overall and .158 (3-for-19) with runners on base.
  • Sam Shutes has made 50 starts in his career, tied for fourth among active Division I pitchers.
  • Chris Meyers is hitting .321 with two home runs and a team-high 16 runs scored since becoming the starting shortstop.
  • First baseman Dalton Bollinger has been heating up at the plate in April. He is hitting .400 with a team-best 22 hits and five doubles.
  • Alex Wagner has been a crucial weapon out of the bullpen for Toledo in conference games. The senior has thrown 15.2 innings against MAC opponents and owns a miniscule 0.57 ERA to go along with 10 strikeouts and just one walk.

Scouting the Competition
The preseason favorite to win the MAC, Kent State sits atop the conference standings with a 10-5 mark and a 25-12 overall record. The Golden Flashes have swept Western Michigan and Northern Illinois in conference play, took two out of three from Central Michigan, and lost two out of three against Ball State and Ohio. Kent State leads the MAC with a .281 overall batting average and a 3.72 ERA. The pitching staff's 1.23 WHIP is tops in the league as well and ranked in the top 20 in the nation. In conference play, the Golden Flashes have held opponents to a .198 batting average and just 3.4 runs per game.
