Last Time Out
Toledo hosted Spring Arbor University and fell by a score of 8-6 on Wednesday. The Rockets fell behind early, trailing 4-2 after four innings. The Cougars scored another run in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, but UT roared back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to jump ahead. Spring Arbor then scored three runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead, this time for good.
Freshman
Kyle Bischoff started the game for Toledo and was one of seven pitchers to take the mound for the Midnight Blue and Gold. At the plate, both freshman
Trace Hatfield and sophomore
Michael Ryan tallied three hits at the plate, career-high totals for the two of them. They also both drove in two runs for Toledo, with seniors
Dalton Bollinger and
Casey Gose driving in the other scores.
Rocket Notes
- With his two home runs last Sunday, Ross Adolph brought his season total to 10. He is the first Rocket with double-digit home runs in a season since 2010 (Jared Hoying and Dan Sherwood, 14).
- Dalton Bollinger has found his groove this month at the plate. He leads the team in hitting since April 1 with a .471 batting average.
- Sam Shutes has done a good job of shutting the door on opposing lineups, as hitters are batting just .197 against him when there are two outs.
- Casey Gose had a big weekend against CMU. Not only did he slug his first career home run last Sunday, he had two hits in all three games against the Chippewas and raised his batting average to .328.
- Toledo leads the MAC in slugging percentage (.723) and is one of three schools for which at least 30% of their hits have gone for extra bases (Miami and Ohio being the other two schools).
Scouting the Competition
Eastern Michigan sits one game up on Toledo in the MAC standings and is 13-20 overall.
In conference play, the Eagles have won their last three weekend series. Last weekend, they took two of three at Ohio and they did the same against Ball State and Bowling Green. Earlier in the season, EMU won two of its three games at Oklahoma State and defeated Ohio State, both of which are ranked inside the RPI's top 50.
The Eagles rank atop the MAC in stolen bases with 63 and inside the top five in batting average (.279) and slugging percentage (.382). Individually, Zachary Owings (.364) and Max Scheumann (.348) are leading the way in the batter's box for EMU. Saturday's starter Luke DeVenney owns a 2.79 ERA in nine starts, while Friday's starter Justin McMurtrey has pitched to a 3.77 ERA in five starts and 12 appearances on the mound. Â
