Tommy Smith enters his second season as the throws coach with the Toledo track and field program this year.
During his first season with the Rockets, Smith coached senior thrower Katie Dewey to an NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary Round appearance for the shot put and discus events. Dewey was the first thrower to compete in the NCAA East Prelims since Kyesha Neal in 2016. Under Smith’s direction Dewey also broke the school record for the weight throw (17.70m), and moved to second all-time for the shot put (15.50m) and discus (49.92m).
Prior to Toledo, Smith coached throws at Bloomington South High School from 2012-2016 in Bloomington, Ind. While at Bloomington South, Smith qualified an athlete to the state championship for five consecutive years. Smith also coached all indoor and outdoor throwing categories at the Indiana Track Club from 2006-2016.
Smith competed as a thrower for Indiana from 2009-2011, earning a fifth-place finish at the 2011 Big Ten Championship in the hammer throw.
Before becoming a Hoosier, Smith competed for Southern Illinois from 2006-2009, earning three All-Missouri Valley Conference honors. Smith tallied top-four finishes in every throwing event at the MVC Championships over the course of his career as a Saluki.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in telecommunication from Indiana in 2011 and works as an operations manager at Fed Ex Ground in Perrysburg, Ohio.
