Charlie Avila is in his first season as a graduate assistant with the Rockets. He will work primarily with the defense.
Avila joins the Rockets after serving for the past two seasons as an assistant at the University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif. He coached the tight ends for the Leopards, and also served as assistant offensive line coach and assistant recruiting coordinator.Â
Avila began his coaching career at Mount Union, where he served as assistant offensive line coach in 2016 and defensive line coach from 2017-18 under current Rocket assistant Vince Kehres. The Purple Raiders won the Division III national title in 2017. Avila coached three first-team All-Americans and five All-OAC players during his time at Mount Union,Â
A native of Los Angeles, Avila was a four-time letterwinner at Mount Union from 2011-14. He played in the 2012 Division III national championship team. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Mount Union in applied criminal justice in 2015 and his master’s degree in educational & organizational leadership from La Verne in 2021.
