Toledo Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Jason Candle
(on Toledo’s low number of plays from scrimmage)
“A lot of explosive plays, including a big kickoff return, and a lack of third-down conversions is going to create a low number of plays. We scored 38 points, but there was a lot plays we left out there that we could have done a better job on. We wanted to get in a rhythm and have some explosive runs. It didn’t work out this week and we need try to figure that out next week. We have a massive test coming up out of conference this week (at Mississippi State) that we need to be on point with.”
(on UMass’ defense)
“UMass made it hard for us on third downs and their defensive backs made some good contested challenges on our throws that were bang-bang plays. We’ll go to work, evaluate the tape and get better.”
(on the defense’s performance)
“We didn’t go into today’s game planning for 45 offensive plays, but our defensive did a good job hanging in there. We had chances to get their quarterback on the ground on third down a few times but didn’t and also jumped offside to extend their drive alive.”
(on the offensive line facing multiple fronts)
“Our offensive line had about as stressful game that’s it going to get with their different pressures and blitz patterns. We figured that we were going to have some plays that didn’t look very good, but that we were going to get some ones that did.”
Wide Receiver Junior Vandeross III
“We knew a big play on offense was out there all game, we just had to execute. With Braden’s interception, that was a huge play and an acrobatic pick. Going back on the field on offense, we knew we had to score after that.”
Quarterback Tucker Gleason
“It was good to get a score in there, get the ball rolling a little bit. To be able to get a completion for a big shot like Junior Vandeross III’s touchdown was a good feeling. As an offense, I think we are knocking at the door. If you knock at the door long enough, somebody’s going to let you in.”
Safety Braden Awls
“The coaches gave us a good call on third down and put me in a good position to make a play on the ball. The pass was a little bit behind the receiver. When I saw that, I undercut the route and tried to pick off the ball.”
