Toledo Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Jason Candle
(opening comments)
“I’m proud of our football team. These Week One games are hard to prepare for when you’ve had so much turnover in our roster like we’ve had. We challenged our guys all week long to make sure we were able to adjust and be sound in those adjustments during the course of the game. We took advantage of some turnovers in the second half to make it a one-sided game. There were a lot of positives to take into our game next week vs. UMass.”
(on the passing game)
“Tucker (Gleason) got off to a great start and was hitting the receivers’ hands and getting the ball where it needed to be. I think the passing game was efficient the entire night. We had high completion percentage and that’s a good recipe for success.”
(on Bryson Hammer’s impact as a punt returner)
“He’s a really good young player. He’s still on the scout team as a receiver but he’s getting first-team reps as a punt returner. A lot of young guys can’t handle that emotionally. He’s really progressing and improving and will have success as a receiver in the future. We trust him back catching the punts and he’s good enough to make things happen like he did tonight.”
Quarterback Tucker Gleason
“There’s definitely a nerve factor to the beginning of a new season, especially with being the starter and having new offensive line. But I knew the whole time once I got the first drive in and I felt that first hit, those nerves would go away and it was just about playing football.”
Safety Braden Awls
“It’s good for you to start off the game hot and get some momentum going. After the first snap and first hit, all of the nerves went away like Tucker Gleason said. After I made a good play on a slant they ran, the game became calm and smooth-sailing from there.”
