The History of the Establishment and Growth of Women’s Sports at the University of Toledo

1922
The "Girls' Basketball" team was founded in December of 1921, the first women’s sports team at Toledo University (as UToledo was known in those days). The team started play in February 1922 under coach Miss Van Voorhees and went 1-3.
The Girls' Athletic Association is founded alongside the basketball team with Christel Hiss named president.
1923
Hiking, Tennis and Baseball are added as women’s club sports.
1924
The women’s club sports roster grows to eight with the addition of field hockey, swimming, volleyball and rifle shooting.
1925
Toledo's Women's Athletic Association becomes a member of the National Athletic Conference of American College Women in January. This allows the "points" awarded for success in women's sports to transfer to other member institutions.
1927
Soccer and track are added as women's club sports.
1930
Golf and archery debut as women’s club sports.
1972
On June 23, President Richard Nixon signed into law Title IX of the Equal Opportunity in Education Act which states that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
1974
Toledo offers varsity sports for women for the first time, adding women’s basketball and women’s tennis. As a result, women begin receiving athletic scholarships for the first time in school history. Women’s swimming and women’s volleyball are added a year later.
1978
Women’s Tennis Coach Marnie Swift is named coordinator of women’s athletics, thus becoming the first female administrator in the UT Athletic Department.
1980
Women’s Track & Field is added as a varsity sport.
1981
Softball and Women’s Cross Country are added as varsity sports.
1991
Women’s Swimming & Diving is added as a varsity sport.
1995
Women’s Golf and Women’s Soccer are added as varsity sports.
