Post-Game Quotes vs. Murray State
Toledo Head Coach Jason Candle
(opening comments)
“It was a really good performance by our team in all three phases. We were a little shaky in the first half with our consistency and it kind of felt like it was our first game coming off the bye week. We got it together at halftime and played a strong 30 minutes in the second half. The crowd was awesome tonight and was a really great representation of Rocket Week for our city and university. Our kids really benefited from the atmosphere and energy in the stadium tonight.”
(on the special teams)
“Our defense and special teams bailed us out a few times when our offense made some mistakes. We got a couple of strong punt returns from Devin Maddox and put a punt inside the five once. We also did a good job on our kick coverage and that’s what it takes to win in conference play.”
(on the defense posting a shutout)
“It starts out with effort and playing really hard. Accountability is also a big part in being where you tell your teammates you’re going to be. Then it’s a matter of toughness and responding to adversity the right way on a consistent basis.”
Senior quarterback Mitchell Guadagni
(on getting back on the field after being injured at Kentucky)
“It definitely felt good getting back out there with my guys. We just need to keep working on some little things so we can get better.”
(on spreading the ball out to a lot of different players)
“The wide receivers and tight ends did a great job getting open on a lot of great calls. We attacked a lot of different parts of their defense and distributing the ball to a lot of different guys helps our offense.”
(on Drew Rosi’s and the other tight ends play)
“Drew did a great job of getting open a lot tonight. I missed him a couple of times. Our tight ends are always in our progressions and the way we attack their defense they were a little more involved. The tight ends did a really good job attacking holes in their defense.”
Junior tight end Drew Rosi
“Throughout the week we talked about how their defense would leave the middle of the field open. The coaches did a good job of calling the right plays at the right time, and we were able to execute. Mitch threw some great balls and the line provided good protection as well. It all just worked out.”
“Our attention to detail was a little shaky in the first half, but I thought our execution in the second half was a lot better. That’s something we can take with us these next few weeks when we play some tough teams.”
Senior linebacker Jordan Fisher
“We weren’t really focused on getting a shutout, we were just taking it one drive at a time. Getting a shutout is great, but our focus was on the series that was happening right then.”
Murray State Head Coach Mitch Stewart
“Toledo is a heck of a football team. They beat us in every facet of the game; offense, defense, and special teams. I thought our quarterback played well to start, but we made some bad decisions as the game wore on. Hats off to Toledo, they’re a really good football team.”
