MCG Final Notes

  • The win secured Toledo’s 11th Mid-American Conference championship and its first since 2004.
  • UT now has 11 wins, the first time since 1995 the Rockets have had that many and the fifth season of at least 11 wins in school history.
  • Saturday was the two year anniversary of Jason Candle being named the head coach at Toledo. He was introduced as the 27th head coach in school history on December 2, 2015.
  • Toledo gained 561 yards of total offense, the third-most in MAC Championship Game history. The 45 points are tied for fifth-most with the 2002 UT squad.
  • The Rockets rushed for 254 yards, the seventh time a team has rushed for at least 250 yards in a MAC title game.
  • Diontae Johnson finished with nine catches, 113 yards, and two touchdowns. He now has 1,257 yards receiving this season, just 13 yards away from a new single-season school record. His 13 touchdown receptions this season are third-most in school history.
  • Johnson’s nine receptions are tied for fourth-most in MAC Championship Game history. He is the 11th player to have at least nine receptions in a MAC Championship Game
  • Danzel McKinley-Lewis set MAC Championship Game records with a 48-yard punt return in the first quarter and with 66 total punt return yards. His 48-yard return set up the Rockets first touchdown of the game.
  • Logan Woodside had 307 passing yards and four touchdowns. He became the fifth quarterback to throw at least four touchdowns in a MAC Championship Game. Bruce Gradkowski also had four in 2004, UT’s last MAC Championship-winning season.
  • Terry Swanson rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns, the 15th 100-yard game of his career. He passed Trinity Dawson (2002-05) to move into fourth place all-time in career rushing yards at UT and is tied with Dawson in 100-yard rushing performances. Swanson now has 3,557 career rushing yards.
  • Swanson averaged 8.6 yards per attempt, the second-best figure in MAC Championship Game history (14.4, Ontario Sneed of CMU, 2006).
  • Olasunkanmi Adeniyi finished with six tackles, three for a loss. He moved into fifth place in school history for TFL in a single season (19.5).
  • Diontae Johnson and Jon’Vea Johnson both eclipsed 100 yards receiving on Saturday, the third time in MAC Championship Game history a team has had multiple 100-yard receivers (Marshall in 2001 and Bowling Green in 2013).
  • Zach Quinn led the team with a career-high 10 tackles.
