Rockets Hosting Youngstown State, New Haven in 2027; Travel to Memphis and Utah State
TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo has finalized its 2027 non-conference football schedule, highlighted by the renewal of an in-state series with Youngstown State and road games at Memphis and Utah State.
Â
The Rockets will open the 2027 season on Saturday, Aug. 28 against Youngstown State at the Glass Bowl before traveling to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis on Saturday, Sept. 4. Toledo will return home to host New Haven on Saturday, Sept. 11 before concluding its non-conference schedule at Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 18.
Â
"We're excited about the variety of our 2027 non-conference schedule," said Toledo head football coach Mike Jacobs. "We'll have an opportunity to play in front of our fans at the Glass Bowl, renew a series with a great in-state program in Youngstown State and compete in some outstanding venues against programs with a strong tradition of success. These are the types of games that challenge our football team and provide our players with tremendous experiences."
Â
The 2027 season will mark the first meeting between Toledo and Youngstown State since 1961. The Rockets and Penguins have met seven times previously, with Toledo holding a 4-2-1 advantage. The two teams will also meet in 2033 at the Glass Bowl.Â
Â
Youngstown State is one of the most accomplished programs in Football Championship Subdivision history. The Penguins have won four national championships – the third-most in FCS – capturing titles in 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997 under legendary head coach Jim Tressel. Youngstown State also finished as the national runner-up in 1992, 1999 and 2016.Â
Â
The matchup with Memphis will be the first meeting between the Rockets and Tigers. Memphis has established itself as one of the nation's most successful Group of Five programs in recent years, recording five 10-win seasons since 2014 and earning an appearance in the 2019 Cotton Bowl. The Tigers rank 10th nationally in total wins since 2014. (Toledo is 19th.)
Â
Memphis will play the Rockets at the Glass Bowl on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2028.Â
Â
The Sept. 11 matchup with New Haven will also be a first-ever meeting. The Chargers will enter their first season as an FCS program in 2027 after previously competing in Division II, where they advanced to the playoffs in three of the past five years.
Â
The Rockets will close their non-conference schedule at Utah State on Sept. 18. The game will be a rematch of the 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Â
Utah State has enjoyed considerable success since 2012, including four double-digit-win seasons, two conference championships and two division championships.
Â
The Mid-American Conference schedule will be announced at a later date. All game dates and opponents are subject to change.Â
