Toledo offensive lineman named semifinalist for second consecutive year
TOLEDO, Ohio – University of Toledo sophomore offensive lineman Matt Hofer has been named a semifinalist for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, recognizing his outstanding commitment to community service, leadership, academics and athletics.
Hofer is one of 11 FBS student-athletes selected from the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team who will compete for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, which has been presented annually since 2005 to the player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field. The award is named in honor of Heisman Trophy winner, College Football Hall of Famer and former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy recipient will be announced during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11 and will also serve as the captain of the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Fans can vote for the award through Nov. 3 at ESPN.com/Allstate, with three finalists to be announced in November.
Hofer, an individualized studies major from Valparaiso, Ind., has established himself as one of Toledo Athletics' most dedicated student-athletes in the community. He has accumulated more than 300 verified hours of community service during his Toledo career, volunteering with organizations and causes throughout the Toledo community.
His service has included preparing and serving meals at Cherry Street Mission, working with Connecting Kids to Meals, volunteering with The Ability Center and Boys & Girls Club, visiting local elementary schools, participating in youth football camps and supporting numerous Toledo Athletics outreach initiatives.
In June, Hofer received his ministry license, earning the title of Reverend at the Hope Community Church of the Nazarene in Oregon.Â
On the field, Hofer is a starter at offensive guard. Last season, he contributed to a Toledo offensive line that helped the Rockets rank among the Mid-American Conference's top offenses in 2025. Toledo led the MAC in scoring offense (30.8 points per game), total offense (415.2 yards per game) and passing offense (238.1 yards per game) last season.
Hofer was also a finalist for the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, further establishing his reputation as one of college football's premier student-athletes for his contributions both on and off the field.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes college football student-athletes for leadership in community service, academics and athletics. The 2026 team was selected from 162 nominees and includes 22 student-athletes and honorary coach Kalani Sitake of Brigham Young University. This year's honorees contributed more than 12,000 hours of volunteer service and raised more than $100,000 for charitable causes.
