Rockets Open MAC Season at Western Michigan Looking for Third Straight Victory

Toledo enters league play coming off pair of dominating performances

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo will open its Mid-American Conference season on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Western Michigan (3:30 p.m./ESPN+) looking to continue its winning ways.

The Rockets (2-1) have won two straight games, most recently a record-setting 60-0 win over Morgan State on Sept. 13. After leading by just a field goal in the first quarter, Toledo rolled up 43 points against the Bears in the second quarter to take a commanding 46-0 lead into the locker room. The 43 points were the most scored by a Toledo squad in one quarter in its 109-year history.

The senior running back duo of Chip Trayanum and Kenji Christian each scored two touchdowns in the second quarter as Toledo outgained Morgan State 233 yards to minus-21 in the period, and 334-24 in the first half. Senior wide receiver Junior Vandeross caught two touchdown passes from Tucker Gleason in the quarter. Gleason was 13-of-17 for 174 yards and one TD in less than one half of action. 

The Rockets' defense dominated all afternoon, allowing just 56 yards of total offense, 12 shy of the school record, and four first downs to the Bears. Junior linebacker K'Von Sherman led the way with a career-high nine tackles, including a career-best 4.0 tackles for loss, one shy of the school record of five.

Western Michigan (0-3) has opened its season with losses to Michigan State (23-6), North Texas (33-30) and No. 9 Illinois (38-0).

    • Toledo's 43 points in the second quarter vs. Morgan State set a program record for most points in one quarter. The 46 first-half points ranks fourth all-time for points in a half.
