Toledo Earns MAC Tournament Bid After Defeating Ball State, 4-3

Jone Ibanez clinched match point for the second-straight contest to help Rockets clinch a spot in the conference tourney

TOLEDO, Ohio – In a battle that came down to the last singles match, the Toledo women's tennis team defeated Ball State, 4-3, at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday. The win clinched a spot for the Rockets in the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season.

Sophomore Jone Ibanez clinched match point for the Rockets after winning an almost three-hour, three-set match, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4 on the No. 4 singles court. Her victory marked the second consecutive match in which Ibanez clinched match point for Toledo.

Toledo (13-6, 6-3 MAC) started the match by winning the doubles point. Audrey Moutama and Gaby Rondon picked up a 6-1 victory on the No. 2 doubles courts while Neha Guru and Jacklynka Scholten combined for a 6-4 win on the No. 1 doubles court to get the Rockets in front, 1-0. UT went up 2-0 after Rondon tallied a 6-3, 6-4 victory on the No. 3 singles court over Ball State's Chloe Brown. Scholten followed with a straight set win on the No. 2 singles court to extend the Rockets' lead to 3-0. Scholten is 16-0 in singles play during her freshman campaign.

Ball State (10-9, 4-5 MAC) tied the match with victories on the No. 1, 5 and 6 courts before Ibanez secured the victory on court 4.

Defending MAC Champion Toledo will host the MAC Tournament at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts on Thursday-Friday, April 24-25. The Rockets are in second place in the MAC East Division, and currently hold the No. 3 seed in the tournament.

UP NEXT
Toledo will host Buffalo on Friday, April 18 in the final regular season match. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
