Rockets Travel to Old Dominion for Saturday MAC-SBC Showdown

Toledo looking for fifth-straight win in final game of three-game roadtrip

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team looks for a 3-0 road trip when the Rockets travel to Norfolk, Va. to face Old Dominion for a 2:00 p.m. tip on Saturday, Feb. 8 in the second game of the MAC-SBC Challenge. Saturday's matchup from Chartway Arena will be streamed on ESPN+ with radio broadcasts on WCWA 1230 AM and The Varsity Network App.
 
At 8-3 in the MAC, Toledo is tied for third place in the standings and three games behind first-place Ball State. Old Dominion is 6-6 in conference games and sixth place in the Sun Belt.
 
The Rockets (16-5) defeated Buffalo, 58-55, on Wednesday thanks to a game-winning three-pointer from Kendall Carruthers with 5.2 seconds left to play. Three Rockets scored in double figures for the game, led by Carruthers with 14 points on 4-of-9 from the field and 2-of-4 from three, and Sammi Mikonowicz with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Nan Garcia scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and had a team-high four assists.
 
The Monarchs (14-10) fell to Troy in a close 83-80 decision on Wednesday. Simaru Fields scored 26 points while En'Dya Buford and Brenda Fontana added 19 and 18, respectively. Old Dominion has lost three-straight games heading into Saturday's matchup.
 
Old Dominion leads the all-time series 1-0. The lone matchup dates back to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 3, 1996, where the Monarchs advanced with a 72-66 victory.

Kendall Carruthers Shines in Clutch Time
  • Kendall Carruthers helped lead the Rockets to a last-second win over Buffalo, grabbing a season-high seven rebounds and scoring 14 points, including the game-winning three-pointer.
  • Carruthers shot 4-of-9 (.444) from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point range, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
  • She scored eight of her 14 points in the second-half, helping stifle a Buffalo comeback.
  • The Toledo native also secured a season-high seven rebounds on Wednesday.
Rocket-Powered Defense
  • The Rockets held Buffalo to its lowest point total of the season on Wednesday.
  • Toledo is third in the conference in scoring defense in conference games, holding opposing teams to just 59.3 ppg. Toledo has held seven of its 11 MAC opponents under 60 points
  • The Rockets have allowed opponents to shoot just 41.3% from the floor and make a league-low 40 three-pointers.
  • Toledo is third in the conference in defensive rebounds, averaging 26.2 per game.
Rebounding Rockets
  • Toledo was +23 on the boards against Buffalo, its best rebounding margin of the conference schedule. The Rockets out-rebounded a conference opponent for the ninth time in 11 games.
  • During its four-game winning streak, Toledo has held Bowling Green (23), Miami (22), and Buffalo (22) to their lowest rebound totals of the season.
  • The Rockets are 24th in Division I with a +7.9 rebound margin this season.
  • UT is +7.9 in conference games, the second-best margin in the league.

  • Toledo can move to a 5-0 record against the Sun Belt over the past two seasons with a victory, having defeated James Madison, ULM, Marshall and Troy in that stretch.
  • Carruthers is averaging 16.5 ppg in her last four games and has shot 25-of-26 at the free throw line in her last six games. She is third in the league in free throw percentage at 87.5%.
  • Sammi Mikonowicz is fifth in the league in field goal percentage at 50.8% and eighth in three-point percentage at 38.3%. She has shot 17-of-28 (65.3%) in her last three games.
  • Mikonowicz sits eighth in the league rebounding charts with 6.0, after grabbing a team-high nine against Buffalo.
  • Khera Goss is sixth in the league in overall field goal percentage (49.5%) and seventh in three-point percentage (39.4%).
  • Faith Fedd-Robinson is 10th in the league with 15 blocks on the season.
