Rockets sweep the conference honor following cross country championships
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo juniors Karina James and Joad Martinho were named the Mid-American Conference's Scholar-Athletes of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday.
James and Martinho earn the awards after each runner won the individual title at the women's and men's cross country MAC Championships, respectively.
James recorded a first-place finish to help Toledo win its fifth-consecutive MAC Championship last weekend. This marks the 11th conference title for the Rockets, the most in league history by any program. The Lowell, Ind. native crossed the finish line with a final time of 20:28.8 to become the eighth individual champion in Toledo women's cross country history. James is majoring in health care administration and holds a 3.916 GPA.
Martinho tallied a first-place finish to lead Toledo to its second straight MAC Championship this past weekend. The Aulnay-sous-Bois, France native won the individual crown with a final time of 23:48.5, nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. With his finish, Martinho becomes the third individual champion from Toledo in the last three years. He owns a 3.196 GPA as an operations and supply chain management major.
The men's and women's cross country teams will continue the championship portion of the season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship race on Friday, Nov. 14 in Evansville, Ind.
To qualify, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, be at a sophomore or higher academic standing and have a worthy performance during the week's competition. One male and one female student-athlete from the conference is selected each week.Â
