Second-Half Goals Drop Rockets in 3-2 Decision in Home Opener

Toledo falls despite two goals from freshman Gabrielle Anulare

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's soccer team could not overcome a pair of second-half Cincinnati goals, as the Bearcats edged the Rockets 3-2 in Toledo's 2024 home opener at Paul Hotmer Field on Sunday.
 
The Rockets (0-1-1) equalized in the 65th minute to tie the game at 1-1, but Cincinnati (2-0-0) took control of the match with goals in the 71st and 78th minutes.
 
Freshman Gabrielle Anulare scored twice in her first home action as a Rocket, with both goals assisted by senior Chloe Tadolini. Junior Agnes Stenlund made five saves in net on the afternoon.
 
Toledo recognized six seniors before Sunday's game – Tadolini, Olivia Dault, Miranda Sullivan, Alexys Ladue, Jenna Foley and McKenna Schultz.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 18' | Cincinnati's Megan Smith scored on a free kick just outside the box to give UC a 1-0 lead.
  • 47' | Morgan Spitler's attempt to equalize from inside the 18 was denied by the UC goalkeeper.
  • 65' | Gabrielle Anulare came down with a ChloeTadolini corner and scored from the left side of the six-yard box to tie the game.
  • 71' | A long ball over the top allowed for a Cincinnati breakaway and Ellie Flower finished to regain a 2-1 lead.
  • 78' | A deflected shot from UC's Vyviene Spauling finished in the top of the goal, giving Cincinnati a 3-1 advantage.
  • 80' | A corner kick taken by Tadolini led to Anulare's second goal of the day, as she finished from the right side of the box to cut the deficit to 3-2.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Cincinnati held a 14-9 overall shots advantage while shots on goal were even at eight a piece.
  • The Rockets were favored in corner kicks, 5-3.
  • Anulare's two-goal effort was a Rocket's first multi-goal effort since Sept. 3, 2023, when Madison Medalle scored twice at Detroit Mercy.
  • Tadolini had multiple assists in a game for the first time in her career, and marked Toledo's first multi-assist effort since Grace Turski on Oct. 8, 2023 against Akron.
  • Sunday's game marked Toledo's second all-time home contest against the Big 12. Toledo previously faced Iowa State on Sept. 18, 2011 against Iowa State in the Glass City.
