Rocket Report with Bryan B. Blair

Team Toledo,

 The single-most important thing we do as an Athletic Department is to support and nurture the dreams and aspirations of our student-athletes. It is a central tenet of our Strategic Plan fly wheel -- “generate student-athlete success” -- and ultimately our reason for being.

You have probably heard me say before that I want all of our student-athletes to compete for a championship, earn a meaningful degree, and go on to be as successful as possible after graduation. We’ve had a chance to see all three of those landmarks hit the mark in a big way for our student-athletes in the past few weeks:

  • Quinyon Mitchell was No. 22 pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, the highest Rocket draft pick in 31 years and the only Group of Five player taken in the first round;
  • Both our men’s and women’s tennis teams won MAC Championships in tournaments played on our own campus, giving our Athletic Department five MAC Championship titles this year and an unprecedented 11 MAC crowns over the past two seasons;
  • More than 70 student-athletes earned the right to receive their diplomas at the 2024 Spring Commencement ceremony at Savage Arena.

The value of college athletics-- to our student-athletes, to the University and to our community – has never been more evident. Almost all of our Rockets will leave here with a diploma, most of them will win or at least compete for a MAC Championship, and some of them, like Quinyon, will reach incredible heights that help shine a national spotlight on Toledo. The value of college athletics has never been more clear, and it has NEVER been a better time to be a Rocket!

QUINYON MITCHELL

When one of our student-athletes reaches the pinnacle of success in his or her sport, it is incredibly gratifying. So when Quinyon Mitchell walked up on that stage at the NFL Draft in Detroit and shook Commissioner Roger Goodell’s hand, it was not only a proud moment for him, but also for his family, his teammates, his coaches, and Rocket fans everywhere.

It is hard to overestimate the impact that Draft Day had on the Toledo brand. From the millions of viewers who watched the actual draft, to the millions more who watched, listened or read about Quinyon on TV, radio, newspapers and on social media, the impact was practically immeasurable. The Toledo name was everywhere. And the ripple effects of Quinyon’s story will continue to put Toledo in the limelight for months and years to come.

Quinyon’s rise to prominence has been a national story, told countless times from coast to coast. After earning All-America honors in 2022, he could have hopped into the transfer portal and looked for greener grass elsewhere. Instead, he chose to remain at Toledo and stay loyal to the coaches and teammates he considered his family. Quinyon had another fantastic year on the football field in 2023, earned his college degree and always represented Toledo in a first-class manner. His hard work and perseverance were ultimately rewarded, and we all got to share in what was truly a historic moment for Toledo.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS - MAC CHAMPIONS!

For the last two weekends in April, Toledo was the center of the MAC Tennis Universe! First, our men’s team repeated as MAC Champions on April 21 with a rousing 4-1 victory over Western Michigan. A week later, our women’s team made it a clean sweep, defeating Miami by the same 4-1 score for its first-ever MAC Tournament title. Both teams advanced to their respective NCAA Tournaments, the first-ever appearance for our women and just the second for our men.

Special kudos to Pawit Sornlaksup and Cassie Alcala, who were both named MAC Player of the Year for the third consecutive year, as well as 2024 MAC Tournament MVPs. Also, congratulations our head coaches, Al Wermer and Tracy Mauntler, incredible leaders who both earned MAC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year.

NEW LEADERS IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

Another critical component to our Strategic Plan flywheel is to “recruit, retain and develop the best teammates.” With our recent hires of Ginny Boggess as our women’s basketball coach and Jacy Dyer as our women’s swimming & diving coach, we have added leaders to our team that will make a positive impact on the young women in their programs for years to come.

Ginny has an impressive resume that includes stops as an assistant coach at Marquette and Penn State, as well as a highly successful stint over the past three years as the head coach at Monmouth University. She inherited a two-win, 2.7 GPA Monmouth team and coached the Hawks to an NCAA tournament appearance in just her second season at the helm. Ginny led Monmouth to its first 20-win campaign in 13 years this past season and finished one victory shy of the program record. Her squad also improved to a 3.5+ GPA to match its success on the court.

Jacy was one of our all-time great Rocket swimmers who went on to coaching success, first as an assistant at James Madison and Virginia Tech, then as a head coach at Fairfield University. A member of the University of Toledo Varsity T Hall of Fame, Jacy was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year after guiding the Fairfield women to the 2023 MAAC Championships title in her first year at the helm. The Stags had another strong finish this past year, coming in second in the MAAC.

419 DAY: ROCKETS SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

From the downtown revitalization, to the booming local business community, the City of Toledo and the Northwest Ohio community is our competitive advantage. That is why we are so bullish on #TeamToledo, as the community, University, and Toledo Athletics pull together to empower our collective dreams and aspirations. As part of our commitment to our community, nearly 100 student-athletes, coaches and staff from the University of Toledo Athletic Department lent a helping hand by volunteering their time on Friday, April 19, better known locally as "419 Day." We collaborated with Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful to help clean up six locations throughout the City of Toledo, collecting more than 3000 pounds of litter from parks and other areas.

419 Day is a great day to celebrate our region and for our Athletics staff to give back to the community that gives us so much. We are grateful to call the 419 home!

DINING WITH THE DEANS

One of my favorite traditions at Toledo is “Dining With the Deans,” which provides an opportunity for Rocket student-athletes to meet with university deans and other leaders in an informal dining setting. Last month, six student-athletes took advantage of an opportunity to exchange ideas, share their academic experiences, and enjoy a meal at Calvino's Restaurant with Dr. Melissa Valiska Gregory, the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

The event marked the sixth time Dining with the Deans has taken place over the past two academic years. A total of 40 student-athletes have participated in these events, allowing for an intimate exchange of ideas and advice, while
providing our student-athletes the opportunity to network with our campus's brightest leaders. We’re looking forward to future connections with University leaders and our student-athletes!

LEADERSHIP FAN COUNCIL

On April 23, we held our first official meeting of the Toledo Athletics Leadership Fan Council. The Fan Council is made up of 20 dedicated Rocket fans who will engage in discussions with Athletic Department leaders and provide meaningful feedback with the objective of maximizing the fan experience at all University of Toledo athletic events.

Members of the Toledo Athletics Leadership Fan Council consist of students, season ticket holders, fans, alumni, donors and University faculty and staff. We are excited about this #TeamToledo initiative that will give fans a stronger voice and greater perspective into the operations of the Athletic Department!

GOOD LUCK TO BASEBALL, SOFTBALL, TRACK & FIELD!

With the spring sports season winding down, I want to wish good luck to our baseball, softball and women’s track & field teams as they enter into post-season. Both our baseball and softball teams are in good positions to make their respective MAC Tournaments, and women’s track & field is poised to make a strong showing at the MAC Championship Meet in DeKalb, Ill. on May 9-11.

Spring 2024 Graduates: A huge “well-done” to all our 2024 Spring graduates. More than 70 student-athletes earned the right to walk at commencement ceremonies at Savage Arena on May 4. We wish all of our graduates good luck as they embark on exciting next steps in their lives. We know you will make Rocket Nation proud!

Tennis Graduation

With all the unprecedented success happening in our Athletic Department, it might be tempting to step back, take a breather and pat ourselves on the back. But we won’t do that. If we want to turn this moment into movement, we have to keep exploring new ways to Rise Together and fulfill our mission: To transform the lives of our student-athletes while elevating the University and community through the power of sports.

Working together as #TeamToledo, we will continue to increase the national prominence of our athletic programs, University, and community, while graduating champions who will one day change the world.

This Community. This University. This Athletics Department.

Together, we will accomplish the "impossible."

Go Rockets!
