TOLEDO, Ohio - Junior centerfielder
Garret Pike of the Toledo baseball team has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today. Pike currently holds a 3.457 grade-point average as a finance major.
A Waterville, Ohio native, Pike enjoyed a monster week at the plate last week with a .529 batting average, six home runs, and 10 RBIs in four games. He also scored nine runs and drew three walks while registering an eye-popping 1.588 slugging percentage to help Toledo post a 3-1 record and win its Mid-American Conference series vs. Northern Illinois.
After opening the week with a homer and three RBIs vs. Youngstown State on Tuesday, Pike registered two homers in back-to-back contests to help the Rockets win the first two games of their series vs. the Huskies. He then homered for a fourth-straight game in Saturday's series finale.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. Each week schools are asked to nominate one female and one male among the sports that are in season at the time. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
