Rockets Finish Off Series Sweep by Edging Akron, 6-5

Toledo opens league play with three straight road wins for second-consecutive season

AKRON, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team posted a 6-5 victory over Akron on Saturday afternoon to open its Mid-American Conference season with a series sweep of the Zips (3-11, 0-3 MAC). The Rockets (7-8, 3-0 MAC) never trailed throughout their opening weekend of league play at Skeeles Field to win their first three conference games on the road for a second-consecutive season.

"It was a great team win to finish off this series," Head Coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I don't think people understand how difficult it is to sweep a weekend series, especially on the road. Akron is a good team and has beaten a nationally ranked Duke team and Illinois. They fought us hard today, but we wouldn't be denied."

Junior Garret Pike spearheaded the Rockets' nine-hit attack with three hits. Redshirt freshman Luke Walton drove in three runs with a three-run homer, while junior Brayden White delivered a two-run double.

"I'm so proud of the way we played and swung the bats this weekend," Reinstetle said. "Today was no different. Many of our guys contributed and had good at-bats throughout."

Sophomore RJ Shunck opened the game with three scoreless innings before allowing three runs (one earned) in the fourth. Senior Kyle Pijaskek (1-0) picked up the win by striking out three batters in 1.1 innings. Freshman Jacob Tabor notched his third save of the year with a scoreless ninth. "RJ gave us a good start and the bullpen was tremendous to finish it out," Reinstetle said.

The Rockets are now idle for the next two days and will return to action with a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Michigan on Tuesday, March 12. UT will then visit Wright State on Wednesday, March 13 before traveling to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face Western Michigan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Luke Walton put the Rockets in front early with a three-run homer to right-center field in the first inning.
  • Akron scored three runs on just one hit to even the contest in the fourth thanks to an error, a walk, a wild pitch and two sacrifice flies.
  • Toledo responded immediately in the fifth and took a 5-3 advantage on Brayden White's two-run double down the left-field line.
  • After the Zips knotted the score at 5-5 with single runs in the sixth and seventh. JP Wagner brought home the winning run in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly.
