Wermer signs extension through 2027-28 season following back-to-back Mid-American Conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths
TOLEDO, Ohio – University of Toledo men's tennis Head Coach Al Wermer has signed a two-year contract extension through the 2027-28 season, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair announced on Friday.
Wermer led the Rockets to back-to-back Mid-American Conference Championships in 2023 and 2024, the team's first league titles since 1973. The conference championships helped the team earn a bid to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2023 and again in 2024. Toledo has posted 14-plus wins in each of the last three seasons, including a program-best 18-6 record in 2023.
"We are extremely excited to have signed Coach Wermer to this extension," said Blair. "Al has been the leader of our men's team for nearly 30 years and has continued to bring the program to new heights. He is a great leader to the young men he coaches and has created an incredible community of alumni. We are grateful to have Al on our team and look forward to his continued leadership."
Wermer was named MAC Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons, becoming the first Toledo men's tennis coach to earn the conference honor.
Wermer, entering his 28th season as the head coach of the Rockets, has turned Toledo men's tennis into a championship program. Following the 2024 season, the Rockets were ranked No. 7 in the Midwest Region in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) year-end rankings. Pawit Sornlaksup was ranked No. 11 in the Midwest Region after making history as the first Rocket to compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship as an individual. Sornlaksup was also the second Rocket to earn MAC Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons under Wermer's leadership.
"I am grateful to Bryan Blair and (Associate AD for Compliance) Kenny Schank for their continued confidence and support in myself and the men's tennis program," Wermer said. "The Rockets are family and I am so proud to extend my ride in college coaching while wearing the Midnight Blue and Gold."
