Senior Madison Medalle scores both of the Rockets’ goals in the season-opener Thursday evening

Chicago, Ill. – The Toledo women's soccer team opened its 2023 season with a 2-2 tie against UIC at Flames Field on Thursday evening. First- and second-half goals by senior Madison Medalle earned the draw for the Rockets.

UIC took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest on a goal from Makenna Maoly. Medalle tied the game at 1-1 with a shot to the top right corner of the net past UIC goalkeeper Lauren Keiser. The Flames regained the lead at the 78 minute mark, until Medalle's second goal of the game with five minutes remaining proved to be the equalizer. UIC had a good scoring opportunity with less than two minutes left but Karson Hill made the save on the left side to secure the 2-2- tie.

"The girls showed a ton of character to come back twice," said Mark Batman, who made his debut as Toledo's head coach. "We had a hard time in the first half on a grass field, but in the second half we felt we played much more like us. Coming back late was great for the group, and the goals we gave up today are absolutely goals we can learn from and goals we won't give up again. It was a good start and we'll take a few days off to recover to get ready for two tough games at home next week."
