TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior Mason Sykes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and became Toledo's all-time career home run leader in a 12-7 win vs. Bowling Green at Scott Park on Wednesday.
Sykes, who already owns Toledo's single-season home run record, slugged his 36th career home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Rockets a 5-4 lead. Sykes' round-tripper helped him pass Dan Sherwood (2008-11) to become the most prolific home run hitter in program history.
The historic moment was one of several big offensive moments for both teams on Wednesday. The two squads, who were facing off in non-conference action, swapped leads five times and combined for 24 hits. The Falcons (14-23) grabbed the lead with a three-run top of the seventh, but Toledo (20-21) answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to wrestle control of the game for good.
"Anytime you can beat your rival in a game is a good thing," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I'm really happy with the way we played today especially on the offensive side of things. We started slow, but once we got going we put some big runs up on the board late to put that game out of reach. A few guys threw the ball well and we played our usual solid defense. Now we set our sights to a big conference weekend against Western Michigan, which is just above us in the standings. I like the energy that we have right now and hope to continue to play well moving forward."
Sykes wasn't Toledo's only hitting hero. Sophomores Brayden White and Brian Fry both reached base three times and combined to drive in three runs. Seven different players drove in runs.
Five different pitchers saw time on the mound for Toledo, with junior Matt LeLito getting the starting nod. Junior Kyle Music earned the win, his fifth of the season, and sophomore Brennan McCune tossed 1.2 scoreless frames to end the game.
Toledo returns home this weekend to host Western Michigan in a three-game series at Scott Park.
