KENT, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team wrapped up its weekend at Kent State with a doubleheader on Sunday and lost both games against the Golden Flashes.
Game one ended with a final score of 6-3 in favor of Kent, and the Rockets lost game two, 7-6, in the bottom of the ninth.
Toledo (13-13, 6-6 MAC) scored first in both games, but Kent State (18-9, 6-3 MAC) came back to win each contest. In the first game, KSU held UT scoreless in the final five innings while managing to overcome its early deficit. In game two, The Golden Flashes tied the game at 6-6 with a three-run seventh inning and walked off the Rockets with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
"This was a really tough day to swallow," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We played well, just not well enough to win. We knew these would all be tough, close games and that was the case. Having game two end on a walk-off bases-loaded walk is a really tough way to lose a game. We had chances in both games to put more distance between us and them and just couldn't. But we don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves. We have five games this week and a matchup at home with Ohio. It'll be another big MAC series we need to play well in."
Junior Jeron Williams saw his 33-game hitting streak come to an end in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. He drew two walks to push his on-base streak to 36 games.
Sophomores Garret Pike and Brayden White tallied multi-hit games in the first game, while freshman Troy Sudbrook and senior Mason Sykes both turned in multi-hit efforts in game two. Sykes hit his ninth home run of the season in game two, the 32nd homer of his career. He is now just three home runs away from tying Dan Sherwood's (2008-11) school record of 35 career home runs.
On the mound, junior Jack Walker started game one and struck out four in four innings and sophomore Brennan McCune struck out four in four innings out of the bullpen.
Junior Matt LeLito got the nod in game two and threw 3.2 innings. Senior Cal McAninch and juniors Camryn Szynski and Kyle Pijaszek also saw time on the bump.
Toledo will be back in action on Tuesday with a mid-week contest at Purdue Fort Wayne before returning home for four straight games at Scott Park. UT hosts Dayton on Wednesday before welcoming Ohio for a three-game series next weekend.
