Rockets’ NCAA Tourney Run Halted in Second Round by Tennessee

Toledo finishes historic season with record-tying 29 wins and first NCAA Tournament victory since 1996

Box Score          KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– The Toledo women's basketball team's historic season came to an end with a 94-47 defeat vs. No. 4 seed Tennessee in second-round NCAA Tournament action at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. on Monday.

The loss ended Toledo's program record 17-game winning streak and brought to an end a season that will go down as one of the greatest in its storied history. The Rockets (29-5) tied the school record for wins, won their second-consecutive outright Mid-American Conference regular-season title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996 and just the fourth time ever.

"Once all the dust settles and we get over the hurt of this season being over, all these kids should look back and be extremely proud of what they accomplished this season," said Head Coach Tricia Cullop, a five-time MAC Coach of the Year. "It's a phenomenal feat to go to the second round when you're a mid-major."

Toledo, a No. 12 seed, faced a tall challenge against No. 4 seed and region host Tennessee (25-11), both figuratively and literally. The Lady Vols, who used a starting lineup with three players standing at least 6-foot-2, used their height advantage to out-rebound the Rockets, 58-30. Tennessee also had a hot shooting night from outside, especially in the decisive second quarter in which it outscored Toledo, 31-14. The Volunteers hit 6-of-8 shots from three-point range in the second period and took a 50-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. The closest Toledo could get in the second half was 24 points.

"We needed Tennessee to not shoot well from three today because we needed to pack it in because of the size disadvantage," said Cullop. "That didn't work out so well. They were very hot from three, which made it difficult for us to match up."

After shooting 48.4% percent from the field in an 80-73 first-round win over No. 5 seed Iowa State on Saturday, the Rockets were held to a season-low 18-of-62 (29.0%) against the Vols.

"It was a really tough matchup for us," said senior guard Quinesha Lockett. "We just tried our best to pack it in the paint. Once we did that they hit their threes so there was nothing we could do about that."

Quinesha Lockett, the MAC Player of the Year, led the Rockets with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-22 from the floor.

1st Quarter
  •  A pair of Quinesha Lockett buckets in the early going kept the Rockets within striking range, trailing just 8-6 at the first media timeout with 4:10 left.
  •  Tennessee opened up a 16-6 lead with an 8-0 run, culminated by back-to-back layups by Jillian Hollingshead.
  •  Tennessee's Sara Puckett's three-pointer late in the quarter gave the Vols a 19-8 edge at the quarter break.
  •  Toledo shot 4-of-14 (28.6%) in the first quarter, including 0-of-6 from three-point range.
  •  The Rockets held Tennessee to just 6-of-18 (33.3%) shooting but were outrebounded 14-9.
2nd Quarter
  •  A Jayda Jansen three-pointer cut the lead to 22-11 but the Lady Vols' Karoline Striplin immediately responded with her second triple of the quarter to extend their lead to 25-11 and force Toledo to call timeout at the 9:10 mark.
  •  Tennessee finished off a 14-4 run with a Hollingshead layup to push the lead to 36-15 at the 5:35 mark.
  •  After Lockett hit a layup to cut the lead to 41-21, the Vols responded with a pair of three-pointers plus a three-point play to take a 50-22 lead into the locker room.
  •  Lockett scored 13 of Toledo's 22 points on 5-of-11 from the floor.
  •  Toledo shot just 8-of-27 (29.6%) from the floor and 1-of-9 from long range in the opening 20 minutes. Tennessee connected on 17-of-36 (47.2%) and made 8-of-14 (57.1%) from three-point range, while outrebounding the Rockets, 25-14.
3rd Quarter
  •  Tennessee increased the margin to 34 points before Lockett made a pair of baskets in a 9-0 Toledo run that cut the deficit to 58-33 with 5:36 to play in the quarter.

  •  Lockett had six of Toledo's 18 points in the quarter.
4th Quarter
