Familiar Faces

When Toledo faces Iowa State on Saturday it will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools, but that doesn't mean they don't have plenty of shared history.

The Cyclones are guided by a familiar face in former Rocket coach Bill Fennelly. A Varsity T Hall of Famer, Fennelly coached at Toledo from 1988-95 and led the program to three NCAA Tournament berths, including two trips to the second round. ISU assistant coach Jodi Steyer was an assistant under Fennelly for six seasons at UT, and Latoja (Harris) Schaben is one of the most decorated players in Rocket basketball history as well as a member of Toledo's Varsity T Hall of Fame.

Schaben earned MAC Player of the Year honors in 1992- 93, leading the league in scoring (21.1 PPG) and field-goal percentage (63.7 FG%) that year. Schaben's 62.3 career field-goal percentage is the highest in school history and she also ranks second all-time in rebounds per game (9.2)

  • Toledo owns a 28-4 overall record coming into the NCAA Tournament.
  • UT's 28 wins are one off the school record of 29 wins set in 2012-13 and 2021-22.
  • Toledo's 28 wins this season coupled with 29 victories last year are the most wins in back-to-back years in program history (57). The previous school record was 54 after UT won 25 games in 2009-10 and 29 games in 2010-11. The MAC record for most combined wins in back-to-back seasons is 58 by Bowling Green (28 in 2005-06, 31 in 2006-07).
  • The Rockets are bringing a 16-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament, which is tied for the longest winning streak in program history with a 16-game streak by the 2000-01 team. That year, Toledo also carried its 16-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament.
  • Toledo's 16-game winning streak in the sixth-longest active streak in the country.
