TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior
Setric Millner Jr. and junior
RayJ Dennis each scored 18 points to lead the Toledo men's basketball team to its seventh-consecutive victory, a wire-to-wire 84-59 triumph over Central Michigan before 5,344 fans in Savage Arena.
The win moved the Rockets (17-6, 8-2 MAC) into a second-place tie with Kent State (18-5, 8-2 MAC), one game behind first-place Akron (17-6, 9-1 MAC). Toledo will put its winning streak on the line when it visits the Zips on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in James A. Rhodes Arena.
Also scoring in double figures was senior
JT Shumate, who tallied 12 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds and three steals. Dennis led the Rockets with eight assists and shot 7-of-12 from the field.
Toledo forced CMU into 21 turnovers and committed just eight miscues, leading to a remarkable 31-2 advantage in points off turnovers. It marked the fourth-straight contest the Rockets have committed fewer than 10 turnovers.
"We had a great start tonight with great energy and intensity," Head Coach
Tod Kowalczyk said. "I thought our ball pressure made them a little bit uncomfortable. Dante Maddox,
Ra'Heim Moss, and
RayJ Dennis did a good job making them play a little further away from the basket than they would have liked."
"I think it was huge to force Central Michigan to commit 21 turnovers," Dennis said. "We stayed locked in and trusted each other. Our defense powered our offense tonight."
The Rockets shot 51.5% in the opening 20 minutes but cooled off in the second half and finished with 45.9 shooting mark for the game. UT converted 11-of-27 shots (40.7%) behind the arc and 17-of-20 attempts (85.0%) at the charity stripe.
