TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team carries its four-game winning streak into the OU Credit Union O'rena on Sunday night when it visits Oakland at 7:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Rockets (5-2) have been victorious in their last five meetings vs. the Golden Grizzlies (4-4) and won, 74-44, at Savage Arena last season.
Last Time Out
Toledo won its fourth consecutive game last Sunday, a 65-35 victory vs. Loyola Maryland at home.
Toledo struggled to find its rhythm offensively to begin the game and trailed Loyola Maryland early on. Once their shots started falling, however, the Rockets grabbed control of the game and didn't look back. UT's defense held the Greyhounds to single-digit point totals in the first three quarters and forced 18 turnovers to help the cause as well.
UT's backcourt duo of
Sophia Wiard and
Quinesha Lockett led the way offensively, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Hannah Noveroske added a season-high nine points off the bench and both
Khera Goss and
Sammi Mikonowicz scored seven points apiece.
Lockett and Wiard Earn Weekly Honors
Quinesha Lockett and
Sophia Wiard both received weekly awards earlier this week. Lockett was named one of the USBWA's National Players of the Week and Wiard was named the MAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Lockett was one of five players honored by the USBWA and one of just six mid-major players this year to earn this award. She led the Rockets in scoring last week, averaging 15.0 PPG while adding 5.0 RPG and 5.0 APG. Lockett scored a game-high 20 points in the win against Michigan.
Wiard was named the MAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career. She scored 14 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists against Michigan and committed just one turnover. In the 65-35 win vs. Loyola Maryland, Wiard scored 13 points while adding five rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals as well.
Rocket Notes
- The 35 points allowed vs. Loyola Maryland were the fewest since an 86-33 win vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 8, 2021. The 30-point margin of victory vs. the Greyhounds was the Rockets' largest of the season and the most since a 31-point win at Western Michigan last season on Feb. 15.
- The Rockets have allowed just 81 combined points over their last two games. That's their fewest points allowed in back-to-back games since the 2012-13 season when they allowed 77 combined points in wins against Eastern Michigan (48-38) and Ball State (63-39) in the final two games of the regular season.
- Bolstered by the last two results, Toledo now leads the MAC in scoring defense (60.43) and scoring margin (+5.75).
- Quinesha Lockett has 2,114 career points and is 31 points away from passing Mimi Olson (2,144 points) to move into second place all-time at Toledo. Kim Knuth is the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,509 career points.
- Lockett ranks sixth among active Division I players in career points and ranks first among active MAC players.
- Sophia Wiard ranks second in the MAC in assist/turnover ratio (2.06) and third in assists (4.71). She has led Toledo in assists in five of the first seven games this year.
- Wiard has 494 career assists, which ranks 13th among active Division I players.
- Hannah Noveroske is averaging 1.57 BPG, which is tied for second in the MAC. She had three blocks vs. Michigan, which tied her season high.
