TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team hosted Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon and fell to the Bearcats by a score of 71-60 at Savage Arena.
It was a tale of two teams to begin the game, as the Bearcats knocked down five of their first seven shots and the Rockets missed six of their first seven to find themselves in an early 14-2 hole. Toledo found its shooting stroke later in the first half and pulled within two, 23-21, near the midpoint of the second quarter. Cincinnati caught fire from beyond the arc, however, made four consecutive three-pointers to push its lead to 14. UT wasn't able to get within single digits until later in the fourth quarter, but by then the Bearcats had built too much of a lead to overcome.
"We just need to get better, we need to make our shots," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "This team is really close to doing what we want to do, but we need to make shots. Unfortunately, we got some really good looks today and the shots just weren't falling. It was a frustrating start, but I know this team and I know how resilient they are. I believed the whole game we could claw our way back into it, and I thought we made a good run at it."
Quinesha Lockett recorded her second double-double of the young season, scoring a game-high 25 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Sophia Wiard joined her in double figures, scoring 13 points. Sammi Mikonowicz collected six rebounds and Hannah Noveroske led all players with three blocks.
Cincinnati's Mya Jackson scored 22 points and did most of her damage from three-point range, knocking down 6-of-7 shots from beyond the arc. Braylyn Milton had 11 points.
Toledo won the battle on the boards, 45-41, and outscored Cincinnati in the paint 40-14.
The Rockets will be spending their Thanksgiving in San Diego and will play two games while on the West Coast. They'll face SMU on Friday, Nov. 24 and North Dakota State on Saturday, Nov. 25 with both games tipping off at 3:00 p.m. ET.
