On her physical and mental growth as a player, her goals for her last season as a Rocket and why she picked chemical engineering as her major
Riley Mohr is entering her last season on the Toledo softball team. A first-team All-MAC selection, Mohr batted .343 with 28 RBIs in 2023. She will graduate in May with a degree in chemical engineering. She is a three-time Academic All-MAC selection, a Dean's List honoree, along with being a CSC Academic All-District selection and NFCA-Scholar Athlete.
On how she got started in softball
When I was five years old, my dad signed me up at the local recreation center for child ball, and from what I remember it was machine pitch. Around the age of 10, he took me to travel softball tryouts, and ever since then I have loved the game. Travel softball was some of the most fun times in my life. I have met some of my best friends throughout my softball career.
On her decision to major in chemical engineering
I knew I wanted to do something math and science-related, so I started looking into cosmetic science here at Toledo. Not wanting to be stuck to just cosmetics, I am minoring in cosmetic science and majoring in chemical engineering. Chemical engineering is a diverse field, and I am glad I can still pursue my interests in science and math as well.
On choosing to attend the University of Toledo
I was committed to a smaller Division 2 school. Then in April of my senior year, the school cut their engineering program. After reaching out to (former head) Coach Joe (Abraham), I came on a visit to Toledo. Even if I ended up not playing softball, Toledo still has all these great qualities for academic success. The small Division I atmosphere and home-like feel Toledo contains was very appealing to me.
On how she approaches the mental aspect of softball
The mental side of a sport is something big to pay attention to when you get to college. It took some time for me to realize that a physical mistake and a mental mistake are two different concepts. I constantly must remind myself that I am capable of achieving these goals. Something I have been concentrating on when things are not working is trying to tweak the little things here and there to get them flowing again.
On being named First-Team All-MAC
Honestly, I was very shocked at first. I never really expected that sort of stuff. I kind of like to be on the down-low and stay out of the limelight, but that's my personality. To see that I was picked over other girls in the league that are good was kind of shocking. I am extremely grateful that I received this award. I just was not expecting it.
On her summer internship
This past summer, I worked as a process engineering intern out in Plain, Washington at a BP refinery. While there, you are assigned three main projects to work on. One project had to do with troubleshooting a mass balance and then the other one I resized different processing units. The last project was making proper documentation for certain things at the refinery. There was a lot that went into this internship, but it was all worth it. I gained a greater understanding of the chemical engineering field.
On what she is looking forward to in this last year
I'm excited to win more games. I am also excited to see how our team grows, not only physically but mentally. Changing mindsets on this team is the big thing I am excited about.
