Sornlaksup picks up his fifth conference honor of career and first of 2023 season
TOLEDO, Ohio – University of Toledo junior Pawit Sornlaksup was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced on Thursday.
Sornlaksup, the reigning MAC Player of the Year, produced a dominant season-opening weekend for the Rockets, defending the No 1 singles court against Boston University and Indiana last weekend.
The Rayong, Thailand native recorded his first singles victory from the top court vs. BU's Johan Dickson in two sets (6-1, 6-0) to help Toledo earn its first victory of the season and 300th career win for head coach Al Wermer. The next day, Sornlaksup recorded the lone victory for the Midnight Blue and Gold in Bloomington, Ind. He took down Indiana's Patrick Fletchell in a quick 6-1, 6-3 decision.
"It is a nice honor to start Pawit's season," Wermer said. "I'm very proud of him and I know that his main concerns are getting better day-by-day and helping the team."
Sornalskup has won his last 24 singles matches in dual competition, dating back to Jan. 29, 2022.
This is Sornlaksup's first MAC Singles Player of the week honor of the season and fifth in his career.
Toledo takes the court vs. No. 2 Ohio State tonight at 5:00 p.m. in Columbus.
