BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team faced off against archrival Bowling Green on Wednesday at the Stroh Center, but wound up on the losing end of an 88-76 decision in the Battle of I-75 presented by Cooper Tires.
The Rockets (12-4, 3-2 MAC) played the Falcons (15-2, 4-1 MAC) close in the first half, but BGSU opened up a double-digit lead early in the second half and didn't look back. Toledo committed an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers on Wednesday and couldn't find an answer for Bowling Green's Allison Day, who scored a game-high 31 points. The 88 points are the most UT has allowed in a game this season.
"I was disappointed with our defense tonight," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "We did some things that were very undisciplined, but I can't take away from the great job Bowling Green did of executing its offense. We were excited for this game, it's a great rivalry, and we're excited to play them again. It's one game, and they outplayed us today. We'll move forward from this and get better, and we'll be ready when we see them next time."
The Rockets will get their rematch on the last day of the regular season, Saturday, March 4, at Savage Arena.
Senior Quinesha Lockett turned in another productive offensive performance, scoring 27 points and going a career-best 11-for-11 from the free throw line. It was the third straight 20-point game for Lockett and the 33rd 20-point game of her career.
Junior Nan Garcia added a season-high 15 points off the bench, knocking down 4-of-5 field shots and 3-of-4 three-point field goals. Junior Sammi Mikonowicz contributed 13 points and four rebounds.
Day was one of five Falcons to reach double figures in scoring, and the next-highest scorer was Jocelyn Tate with 13 points.
Next up, Toledo will return home to host Akron (13-3, 4-1 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2:00 p.m.
Saturday's game will be Toledo's first-ever "Justice for Sierah" game. The Rockets are hosting this promotion in conjunction with the Justice for Sierah Foundation. For more information on the foundation, please visit justiceforsierah.org.
The game will feature several fundraisers to support the foundation, including a special ticket deal where $5 of each ticket purchased through utrockets.com/J4S will be donated to the foundation.
