Toledo Set to Battle Ball State at Savage Arena Wednesday Night

Rockets looking to get back in win column after Saturday's loss at NIU

1/10/2023 1:13:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team returns to Savage Arena for a big Mid-American Conference battle with Ball State. Wednesday's game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Wednesday night will be Alopecia Awareness Night at Savage Arena. A portion of the money from tickets purchased through utrockets.com/alopecia will be donated to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

The Rockets (10-3, 1-1 MAC) will be looking to get back on track after a 67-66 setback at Northern Illinois (9-4, 1-1 MAC) on Saturday. The loss snapped Toledo's 14-game road winning streak, the longest in the country at the time, and its seven-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, a pair of Rockets turned in excellent individual performances at NIU. Junior Sammi Mikonowicz helped Toledo win the battle on the boards, 48-38, thanks to a season-high 19 rebounds, the second-most rebounds in a game by a MAC player this season. Senior Quinesha Lockett also led the Rockets with 18 points and brought her career total to 1,579, officially passing Kaayla McIntyre (2015-19) to move into eighth place all-time in school history in career points. Next up on Toledo's career scoring list is Kelly Savage (1,677 points).

The other half of Toledo's dynamic backcourt duo, senior Sophia Wiard, is approaching an important career milestone of her own. The Muskegon, Mich. native enters Wednesday's game with 991 career points, leaving her just nine points away from becoming the 32nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Lockett leads Toledo in scoring and ranks ninth in the league at 15.0 PPG. She is followed by junior Khera Goss (9.7 PPG) and Mikonowicz (9.3 PPG), the latter of whom is third in the MAC in rebounding (8.0 PPG).

As a team, the Rockets rank in the top four in the MAC in both scoring defense (2nd, 58.5) and scoring offense (4th, 71.3) and sit second in scoring margin (+12.8). Toledo is the only team in the conference to rank among the top three in both field-goal percentage defense (37.8%) and three-point field goal percentage defense (25.5%), ranking third and first, respectively.

Toledo will play its next two games on the road at Kent State (Saturday, Jan. 14) and at Bowling Green (Wednesday, Jan. 18). The Rockets' next home game will be Saturday, Jan. 21 vs. Akron.
