TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team will continue its fall competition this weekend when it sends four student-athletes to Tulsa, Okla. for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships.
The All-American Championships is the men's first national championship of the fall season and runs Oct. 1-9 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of University of Tulsa.
Pre-qualification matches will begin Saturday, with qualifying play running from Oct. 3-4 and the main draw playing Oct. 5-9. Of those competing in the men's tournament, 19 of the top-20 ranked players in the ITA are entered into the main draw, including Toledo junior
Pawit Sornlaksup in the singles championships.
Along with Sornlaksup representing the Midnight Blue and Gold this weekend are
Marko Galic,
Krzysztof Wetoszka and
Adam Kovac. Galic, Wetoszka, and Kovac pre-qualified for the singles draw that will begin competition on Saturday. Additionally, Sornalskup and Galic qualified for the doubles draw that is scheduled to start Tuesday.
"To say this is the largest college tournament in the world is not an embellishment," head coach
Al Wermer said. "It includes the best players from Division I across the country starting with a pre-qualifying group of 256 guys. You literally can keep playing until you lose. For us, these same four players went last year, and they're familiar and excited about the challenge and opportunity."
At last year's ITA All-American Championships, both Sornlaksup and Wetoszka came away with a victory in the pre-qualifying consolation draw to finish 1-1 at the tournament. Galic and Kovac each went 0-1.
