TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team (7-4) completed a 2-0 weekend at the Toledo Challenge on Saturday with a three-set sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne.
"That was a great team effort," head coach
Jason Oliver said. "I truly thought that the Purdue Fort Wayne team and coaches had a great game plan and we just found the little adjustments to score points. That is a big step forward for our team that in the past wouldn't be able to adjust that fast. Across the board our team showed up and I love the energy we got from the Savage Arena crowd."
For the second straight day, the Rockets swept a non-conference opponent on their home court. UT won the first two sets without much of a struggle from the Mastodons, but had to overcome a late deficit in the third set to complete the sweep.
The Rockets also swept Eastern Illinois on Friday.
Senior
Rhyenne Filisi and junior
Taylor Alt led the way with nine kills apiece. Filisi also tallied three blocks, one behind senior
Olivia Vance (four) for the most on the team. Vance added seven kills and hit .500, capping a weekend in which she averaged 2.33 kills/set, 1.33 blocks/set and hit .542 across two matches. Senior
Ryann Jaqua recorded a match-high 20 digs and averaged 6.17 digs/set for the weekend. Junior

Mid-American Conference play begins next week for the Rockets with two matches at Eastern Michigan on Thursday and Friday.
1st Set (25-15, Toledo)
Toledo jumped ahead early, taking a 9-4 lead in the first set. The score was tied at 4-4, but a 5-0 run by UT punctuated by a service ace from senior
Abby Ray pushed the Rockets' lead to five. PFW got one of those points back following a timeout, but Toledo scored four straight points to extend its lead to eight, 13-5. The final margin would settle at 10, 25-15, in the Rockets' first set victory. UT hit .333 in the first set, its best attack percentage of the match.
2nd Set (25-20, Toledo)
The Rockets held a 10-6 lead early in the second set before the Mastodons used a 9-3 scoring run to go up 15-13. Toledo would not stay down long, with Filisi and junior
Jada Bouyer recording back-to-back kills to tie the score at 15-15 and junior
Rachel Pierce giving UT the lead with a clutch block. That proved to be all the Rockets needed to close out the second set, as they would not trail for the remainder of the frame en route to a 25-20 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
3rd Set (25-23, Toledo)
The tightest set of the match, was controlled by Purdue Fort Wayne for much of the latter half. A 6-0 run gave the Mastodons a 16-14 lead, and they led as late as 23-21. With their backs against the wall, the Rockets fought to tie the score at 23-23 before back-to-back kills from Pierce and Filisi ended the third set and emphatically concluded a Midnight Blue and Gold victory.
