TEMPE, Ariz. – The Toledo women's volleyball team captured the Webb-Burbridge Classic title with a three-set sweep of tournament host Arizona State on Saturday.
The Rockets' win over the Sun Devils was their first over a Power Five program since 2010 when the team defeated No. 12 Michigan. Toledo held Arizona State to a .138 attack percentage in Saturday's win.
"This is a great first weekend for our program," head coach Jason Oliver said. "I am happy with the entire team's contribution to three tough wins. We are on the right track and really look forward to seeing this team grow every day."
Junior Jada Bouyer was named the Webb-Burbridge Classic MVP after averaging 2.91 kills/set and hitting .344 across three matches. Senior Ryann Jaqua was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 4.73 digs/set on the weekend.
Bouyer led the Rockets offensively on Saturday with an outstanding performance, tallying a match-high 12 kills and hitting .550. Junior Payton Morman contributed 35 assists and a pair of blocks, while senior Olivia Vance added five stuffs and six kills. Seniors Ryann Jaqua (12) and Sina Uluave (10) cracked double figures in digs against the Sun Devils.
The Rockets will head up to Ann Arbor for a tournament at Michigan next weekend. Toledo will face the Wolverines as well as Loyola Chicago and Morehead State.
1st set (25-19, Toledo)
Junior Taylor Alt got the night started with a kill to put the Rockets on top very early. Both teams traded points until the score was tied at 7-7, at which point Toledo took over. The Rockets went on a 9-1 run to take a 16-8 lead, scoring seven straight points at one juncture to double up the Sun Devils. ASU trimmed its deficit to three, 19-16, but UT never relinquished its lead. Uluave and Vance tallied back-to-back kills to end the first set and take a 1-0 lead.
2nd set (25-22, Toledo)
Toledo hit .333 in the second set, its highest attack percentage of the match. Arizona State scored the first point of the set, but two straight Rocket points secured their lead for the remainder of the second stanza. The Sun Devils came close near the end of the set, pulling within two at 24-22, but Morman and Vance combined on a block to provide the clinching point and give the Midnight Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead in the match. Tournament MVP Bouyer was outstanding in the second set, tallying six kills on seven attempts with no errors.
3rd Set (25-21, Toledo)
The third set started as a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading points early. With the score tied at 8-8, the Rockets wrestled control away from the Sun Devils and scored seven of the next eight points to take a commanding 15-9 lead. Toledo would never trail for the remainder of the match. Arizona State pulled within two, 23-21, on a service ace, but Alt and Morman registered consecutive kills to end the match and clinch a 3-0 weekend.
