Toledo Completes Series Sweep with 15-5 Run-Rule Victory over EMU

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team capped its series sweep of Eastern Michigan with a 15-5 run-rule victory on Sunday at Scott Park.

A day after stunning the Eagles with a 14-run second inning, the Rockets once again did significant damage in the second frame. They scored eight runs in the second inning on Sunday and followed that up with a six-run bottom of the fifth. UT held a 14-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh and needed just a run to capture its second-straight run-rule win. Freshman Garret Pike delivered a base hit into the gap in right-center field, driving home sophomore Scott Mackiewicz to end the game.

The Rockets utterly dominated their weekend series against the Eagles, scoring 46 runs in four games while hitting. 434 at the plate and slugging .752 as a team. The pitching staff posted a 4.20 ERA across all four contests and walked just seven while striking out 25.

"I'm so happy for the team and program to finish off this weekend the way we did," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I don't think people understand how difficult it is to sweep a four-game series. Camryn Szynski gave us a nice start, and Patrick Dillon and Parker Newby were both good out of the bullpen today. But the story of the day was the offense again. They continue to have great at-bats up and down the order. We did what we needed to this weekend and are in a good spot in the MAC standings. We still have lots of baseball left to play and just need to keep focused on the task at hand, winning one pitch at a time."

Toledo improved to 22-17 overall and 16-11 in MAC play after winning its seventh straight game on Sunday, its longest winning streak since 2011 when the team won 11 straight games.

The Rockets slugged four home runs on Sunday, with senior John Servello providing the largest of them all, his second-inning grand slam blowing the game wide open. Freshman Brian Fry, redshirt freshman Trey Wright, and junior Mason Sykes all hit home runs as well.

Sophomore Jeron Williams capped a terrific weekend with a 2-for-4 performance, scoring twice. Fry, Wright, and freshman Caden Konczak all went 2-for-4 and combined to drive in seven runs. In addition to driving in the game-winning run, Pike went 3-for-5 at the dish.

Szynski threw 4.1 innings and struck out two, while Newby tossed two scoreless frames while striking out three.

The Rockets will take a break from conference play next weekend with a three-game home series against Austin Peay.

How it Happened
  • Pike led off the bottom of the second with a base hit, then two pitches later jogged home on Sykes' 11th homer of the year. That kicked off an eight-run inning that saw the Rockets bat around for the third time in two days.
  • Servello's grand slam provided the crushing blow, turning a 4-0 lead into an 8-0 lead.
  • Eastern Michigan's Brady Huebbe got his team on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
  • The Eagles used a four-run top of the fifth to trim the deficit to three, 8-5.
  • The Rockets bounced back with a six-run bottom half of the fifth to go ahead 14-5. Konczak drove in the first run of the inning, then in the very next at-bat Wright lifted a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right field for a three-run home run. Fry homered after wright to go back-to-back, and the final run of the inning came in on an Eastern Michigan error.
  • After Newby sent the Eagles down in order in the top of the seventh, Pike drove home Mackiewicz with a base hit into the gap to end the game.
