TOLEDO, Ohio - Men's basketball head coach
Tod Kowalczyk announced Wednesday that sophomore guards
Tyler Cochran and
Dante Maddox Jr. will transfer to the University of Toledo to join the Rockets' program next season. Cochran played last season at Ball State, while Maddox comes to Toledo from Cal State-Fullerton.
"We're very excited to have Tyler and Dante join our program," Kowalczyk said. "Tyler and Dante are both humble, hungry and want to be a part of our winning culture. We recruited both of them extremely hard out of high school and had relationships with their parents and high school coaches just like we did with
RayJ Dennis last year. We had so much such success with RayJ's transition to our program that we went back to the formula of recruiting guys we know."
Â
A 6-2, 220-pound wing, Cochran led the Mid-American Conference with 2.0 spg last year and was Ball State's second-leading scorer (11.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.6 rpg) while playing 27.1 mpg. He scored in double figures 18 times, highlighted by a career-high 28-point, nine-rebound outing vs. Buffalo (Jan. 14).
Â
"Tyler is a proven player in the MAC," Kowalczyk said. "He's been one of the better wings in the conference, and he's strong, tough and extremely versatile. He brings an element of toughness we love. We already have some tough guys on our roster, and he adds to that mix."
Â
Cochran also spent two years in the MAC at Northern Illinois. In the 2020-21 campaign, he paced the Huskies with 15.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 1.7 spg and was one of four players in the MAC to averaged 15.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg. He scored in double figures in 11 of 12 games, including a 26-point showing vs. Buffalo and a 20-point, 13-rebound effort vs. Akron.
A 6-2, 195-pound guard who finished third in Illinois' Mr. Basketball voting in 2020, Maddox was the Titans' second-leading scorer with 11.9 ppg as a freshman to go along with 2.1 rpg in 16 games (9 starts). He shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from three-point range and ranked 10
th nationally with an 89.8 free-throw percentage.
"Dante is a tough defender who can really score the ball," Kowalczyk said. "He's exactly what we needed in our backcourt. His dad's a high school coach, and I can't say enough good things about Dante and what he will bring to our program."
Kowalczyk said 6-5 wing Cooper Davis will be joining the program in the 2022-23 campaign as well.
"We're really excited about having Cooper become part of our Rocket family," Kowalczyk said. "We look for him to be an impact shooter for us. We have already talked to him about redshirting next season, and we're excited to see how he develops in his Rocket career."
Davis averaged 20.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg and earned third-team Division I all-state honors at Olentangy Liberty High School. The first-team all-district, first-team all-conference selection topped the 30-point mark three times and the 20-point mark on 12 occasions. Davis also holds school records for three-point FGs in a career (187), season (69) and game (8) as well as 3PTFG% in a season (46.8).
