Big Day from Mason Sykes Leads Toledo to 13-6 Win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Junior Mason Sykes tied a career-high with seven RBIs in the Toledo baseball team's 13-6 win at Elon on Friday.

The Rockets plated a season-high 13 runs on 15 hits in Friday's series opener. A five-run top of the fifth provided the bulk of the offensive production and afforded Toledo enough of a cushion to withstand a late Elon rally. The Phoenix scored five runs over the final four innings and had runners on second and third in with two outs in the top of the ninth. The rally would go no further, and UT registered its third straight win.

"We played a pretty complete game tonight and got another Friday win," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "Kyle Jones had another quality start to set the tone, and we played another strong defensive game as well. The highlight of the game was the offense; the boys came out swinging and never stopped. Mason Sykes and Jeron Williams both had really nice days at the plate, but everyone contributed in some way. After last weekend at High Point, we challenged the hitters to keep the pressure on and extend the lead in games. They did just that. Elon is a quality team and will come at us tomorrow. We have to match that intensity and build off this win tonight."

Sykes went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and drove in seven runs for the second time in his career. Sophomore Jeron Williams tallied four hits and scored twice, while senior John Servello and freshman Brian Fry both recorded two hits at the plate.

Servello scored three times in the No. 2 spot in the order and the next four hitters all crossed the plate twice: Sykes, Williams, redshirt freshman Trey Wright and junior Darryn Davis.

Junior Kyle Jones got the start on the mound and had another good outing, striking out five while allowing two runs in six innings to earn his third win of the year. He was one of five pitchers to see time on the mound, with junior Cal McAninch, redshirt freshman Yianni Skeriotis, sophomore Cole Rodriguez, and sophomore Gavin Starcher all making appearances out of the bullpen.

These two teams will meet again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Sykes drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first. His base hit into left field scored Servello and put the Rockets ahead 1-0 early.
  • A three-run homer by Sykes in the top of the third put Toledo's advantage at 4-0.
  • Elon got one of those runs back with an RBI double in the bottom half of the third.
  • Davis tallied the first RBI in Toledo's five-run fifth inning on a groundout that allowed Servello to score. Two pitches later, Sykes slugged his second homer of the day to make it 7-1.
  • Later in the inning, Williams scored on a wild pitch and Fry placed an RBI double down the line in left field to give the Rockets a 9-1 lead.
  • Senior Nicky Winterstein added to UT's lead with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.
  • The Phoenix added one run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to try and chip away at Toledo's lead.
  • The Rockets continued to pile it on with three runs in the top of the eighth. An Elon error brought in the first run, while Sykes and Williams each drove in a run to push UT's lead to 13-4.
  • The Phoenix scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Starcher easily recorded a three-pitch strikeout to end the game.
