Toledo Falls to Miami, 14-13, in 12 Innings

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo and Miami played a 12-inning game for the second time in as many days on Saturday, but this time the RedHawks came out on top 14-13.

Sunday's series finale has been canceled due to weather and will be made up at a later date.

Miami led 5-0 after three innings, but Toledo's offense woke up in a big way in the middle innings. UT scored two in the fourth, six in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take an 11-7 lead heading into the seventh. The RedHawks would score two runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but the Rockets responded in the eighth and ninth to extend the game. After both teams posted scoreless frames in the 10th and 11th, a two-out single from Miami's Dom Magliocca in the top of the 12th brought home the deciding run.

"Today was a tough loss to swallow," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I'm proud of the way we clawed our way back into the game after an awful start, but I'm also disappointed in the fact we just handed Miami the game. Giving up 14 hits, committing four errors, and handing them too many free bases is not conducive to winning a baseball game. You should win every time if you score 13 runs. Winning is hard and as good as we felt yesterday by winning two big games, today just stings. I told the team I was proud of them and didn't question the effort at all. It was a lack of execution when it really mattered that bothered me."

Freshman Garret Pike had his best day at the plate so far this season, slugging two home runs and tallying three RBIs on the afternoon. The Rockets' top three hitters in the order – sophomore Jeron Williams, sophomore Scott Mackiewicz, and junior Darryn Davis – each had two hits and combined to score seven times. Williams hit his first home run of the season, a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. Freshman Brayden White had a pair of hits and drove in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extras.

Five pitchers saw time on the mound on Saturday. Sophomore Connor Brandon started the game, striking out five in 4.1 innings.

Next up for Toledo is a midweek contest at Ohio State on Wednesday, followed by a home series against Ball State next weekend.

"We have a busy week ahead," said Reinstetle. "We face a Big Ten team in a rare midweek game, then welcome first-place Ball State to Scott Park next weekend. It all goes back to being consistent in all phases of the game for nine innings. We need to grow from today and play well this week."

How it Happened
  • Miami scored runs in the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead, a stretch highlighted by Cole Andrews' leadoff home run in the top of the third.
  • Pike's first home run of the day was a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth that got Toledo on the board.
  • The RedHawks got those two runs back in the top of the fifth, scoring twice to push their lead back to five, 7-2.
  • A six-run bottom of the fifth gave Toledo its first lead of the day. Mackiewicz and Davis tallied back-to-back RBI singles, then Mackiewicz came around to score on a wild pitch that put the score at 7-5. Redshirt freshman Trey Wright's sac fly made it a one-run ballgame, then Pike blasted another home run to right field to emphatically give Toledo an 8-7 lead.
  • The Rockets extended their lead to 11-7 with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Mackiewicz's RBI triple brought home the first run, then he scored on Davis' double into the right-center field gap. Junior Mason Sykes lined a base hit into center field to bring in the final run of the inning.
  • A two-run home run by RedHawks' Zach McDonald in the top of the seventh trimmed Toledo's lead to 11-9.
  • A two-out, two-run double off the bat of Miami's Benji Brokemond in the top of the eighth made it an 11-11 game.
  • Williams led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run that allowed Toledo to retake the lead, 12-11, going into the top of the ninth.
  • Miami took advantage of a pair of Toledo miscues in the top of the ninth to score twice and take a 13-12 lead.
  • The Rockets sent the game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth. With senior Nicky Winterstein standing on first base as a pinch-runner, White laced a two-out double into the gap in right-center field. Winterstein came all the way around to score and tie the game at 13-13.
  • Winterstein singled in the bottom of the 11th, stole second base, and advanced to third on a deep fly ball, but the inning ended with him standing on third base.
  • The game-winning run was driven in by Miami's Magliocca on a two-out single into center field in the top of the 12th. The Rockets went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.
