Toledo Cruises to 74-44 Victory vs. Oakland in Final Non-Conference Game

Rockets extend winning streak to six games

TOLEDO, Ohio – In its final non-conference game of the season, the Toledo women's basketball team (9-2) cruised to a 74-44 win against Oakland (6-5) in Savage Arena on Wednesday night.

The Golden Grizzlies led for much of the opening stages of the first quarter, but it did not take the Rockets long to wrestle control of the game away, as they led by six heading into the second frame. A quick 7-0 run at the end of the first half pushed the lead into double digits, and by the end of the game UT had opened up a 32-point lead.

Toledo closes out its much-anticipated non-conference schedule with a 9-2 record, its only losses coming to a Duke squad that received votes in the latest AP poll and to Penn State in a one-point decision on a neutral court. The Rockets' win over Oakland on Wednesday was the first by a MAC team this season, as the Golden Grizzlies owned a 3-0 record vs. MAC schools coming into the game.

"I'm really proud of the way our team played tonight," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "Oakland was 3-0 against our league, so we definitely knew we needed to be prepared. Tonight was a very physical game and I was proud of us for keeping our composure, continuing to cut hard, and for getting to the free throw line. I was proud of the way we shared the basketball tonight as well."

Three Rockets reached double figures in scoring, with junior Khera Goss leading the way with 13 points. Classmate Sammi Mikonowicz added 12 points and seven rebounds, and senior Quinesha Lockett scored 10 points while also grabbing seven boards. For the second game in a row, senior Sophia Wiard tied a career high with 11 rebounds. Her efforts helped Toledo collect 54 total rebounds on Wednesday night, a season high and the most since tallying 65 vs. Northern Illinois on March 1, 2017.

The Rockets shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56) as a team and dished out 19 assists while committing just 11 turnovers. UT turned in another stout defensive performance, holding Oakland to a 25.4 shooting percentage (17-for-67), the lowest by an opponent this season.

The Golden Grizzlies did not have a player reach double figures in scoring. Miriam Ibezim was their leading scorer with nine points.

Toledo will not see the court again for game action until after the new year. MAC play begins on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m. vs. Western Michigan.

1st Quarter
  • Oakland's Alexis Johnson opened the scoring with a jumper just 17 seconds into the game.
  • The Golden Grizzlies led for much of the first quarter and led 9-8 at the 3:14 mark.
  • Toledo responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Mikonowicz and senior Jayda Jansen to take a 14-9 advantage.
  • Junior Lonasia Brewer scored the final four points of the quarter to help UT take a 18-12 lead into the second frame.
2nd Quarter
  • Oakland kept pace with Toledo for the first half of the second quarter. Near the midway point of the quarter the Rockets' lead still sat at six points, 29-23.
  • Seven straight points for the Midnight Blue and Gold quickly built their lead to 13 points, 36-23, when the horn sounded for halftime. Junior Nan Garcia's bucket started the run, and senior Justina King followed with a three-pointer before Mikonowicz capped it with a layup with 39 seconds to go.
  • Toledo held Oakland scoreless for the final 4:50 of the first half.
3rd Quarter
  • The Rockets continued to outpace the Golden Grizzlies in the point column and opened up a 19-point lead, 52-33, with 3:58 to go in the quarter.
  • Toledo was held without a field goal for the final 4:19 of the quarter, but used the free-throw line to maintain its lead. King, Jansen, and Brewer all sank free throws in the final four minutes to help UT keep Oakland at bay and take a 55-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter
  • The Rockets held the Golden Grizzlies to 2-of-15 shooting (13.3 percent) in the fourth quarter and Goss scored eight of her 13 points.
  • All eight of Goss' fourth-quarter points came within a stretch that lasted less than two minutes of game time. Her first basket of the quarter came with 7:48 to play and at the 5:53 mark she completed an and-one to make the score 65-38.
  • Oakland's first field goal of the fourth quarter didn't come until the 5:03 mark, and its only other basket came with just 38 seconds left in the game.
  • By that point, Toledo had pushed its lead into the 30's and its final margin of victory would settle at exactly 30 points, 74-44.
