DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Toledo women's basketball team wrapped up its stay at the Daytona Beach Invitational on Saturday with a convincing 80-70 win over UT Arlington that also marked head coach
Tricia Cullop's 300th win at Toledo.
Already the program's all-time winningest coach, Cullop now sports a 300-160 record in her 15th season at Toledo, and a 423-270 overall mark in 23 years as a head coach, including eight seasons as the leader at Evansville from 2000-08.
The Rockets controlled Saturday's game from the outset, leading for nearly the entire first half. The Mavericks trimmed UT's lead to two early in the second half, but by the end of the third quarter Toledo had built its lead back into double figures. Both teams shot well in the fourth quarter, but the Rockets forced six turnovers to help keep the hot-shooting Mavericks at bay and hold on to win.
Junior
Sammi Mikonowicz led Toledo with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while also adding five rebounds and a team-best three steals. Senior
Quinesha Lockett contributed 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds, bringing her career point total to 1,483, which puts her ninth all-time in school history. Lockett did the bulk of her damage at the free throw line, sinking 8-of-9 shots.
Sophomore
Jessica Cook was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and made both of her free throw attempts to bring her point total to 12 and led UT with six rebounds. Junior
Khera Goss tied a career high with 13 points and cracked double figures for the third time this season.
"UT Arlington is a really good team, I have a lot of respect for [head coach] Shereka Wright," Cullop said. "They play really hard, they're a scrappy team and their press bothered us at times. We found some offense today, which we really needed, and when we controlled the boards we were able to extend our lead. I was also really proud of the way Sammi played today, she was outstanding."
As a team, Toledo was 27-for-51 (52.9 percent) from the floor and 20-of-23 (87.0 percent) from the free throw line, both of which are season-best shooting percentages.
UT Arlington was led by Starr Jacobs and her game-high 29 points, 13 of which came in the second quarter. Kayla White and Shiya Smith contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively. The Mavericks shot 44.3 percent from the field (27-for-61) but were just 2-of-10 from three-point range.
Next up for Toledo is a road contest at Loyola Maryland on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 11:30 a.m.
