TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 93-66 win over Canisius at Savage Arena on Friday evening.
The Rockets stormed out to a 23-6 lead after one quarter of play, but saw its lead dip back down to seven points, 36-28, after the Golden Griffins (0-2) put together a 14-4 run midway through the second quarter. UT quickly rebounded and pushed its lead back to double digits, maintaining control for the remainder of the game.
"I thought Canisius played us hard in that first half, especially when they cut the deficit to seven in the second quarter," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "I think that was important for our players, it gave them something to respond to. I thought we responded well. We got some turnovers that led to some easy baskets, but it easily could have gone the other way. I was happy to see us come out and play a little cleaner in the second half. Today was a good test. They threw a lot of different things at us and we responded well."
Senior Quinesha Lockett scored a game-high 27 points and added 10 rebounds for her fifth career double-double. Senior Sophia Wiard stuffed the box score on Friday, scoring 20 points while adding four rebounds and six assists. Junior Khera Goss (10 points) and senior Justina King (10) both cracked double figures in scoring as well, while junior Lonasia Brewer contributed seven rebounds, five on the offensive end. Junior Sammi Mikonowicz nearly turned in a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Toledo shot 45.3 percent from the floor and made 10-of-24 three-pointers (41.7 percent) while also taking care of business from the free throw line. UT made 25-of-31 free throws on Friday, the most made free throws in a game since Feb. 1, 2020 vs. Kent State. The Rockets also outrebounded Canisius, 47-30, and held their opponents to 20-of-56 shooting (35.7 percent).
Vannessa Garrelts led the Golden Griffins in scoring with 16 points and Dani Haskell was close behind with 15 points.
Next up for Toledo is a matinee matchup at Cincinnati on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The Rockets and Bearcats will tip off at 11:00 a.m. at UC's Fifth Third Arena.
