Rockets Make Program History with Ninth-Place Finish at NCAA Great Lakes Regional

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophomore Dennis Mutai finished in 34th place to lead the Toledo men's cross country team to a program-best ninth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Indi. on Friday.
Five Rockets finished with personal-best times as Toledo collected 300 team points. Wisconsin won the race with 50 points, followed by Notre Dame (61 pts) to automatically punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. next weekend.
"I'm really proud of the men today," said head men's coach Nick Stenuf. "We came in with two of our top three guys not being able to run leading up to the race. We tied our program's highest finish in the Mid-American Conference Championships and followed it up with the program's first ever top-10 regional finish. While I know we are better than what we showed today, this is encouragement for our program as we move forward.
"If you would have told me three years ago that our team would be disappointed with our MAC and regional finish of second and ninth respectively, I would have told you that you are crazy. But the truth is, we are disappointed and that's a good thing. I'm very much looking forward to watching this program raise the bar."
Mutai ran the first 10K of his career as a Rocket with a personal-best time of 30:49.8. Junior Benjamin Otis ran to a 43rd-place finish with a PR time of 31:00.2, and was followed by Mathew Chesum in 47th-place. Junior Geoff Howles ran a PR 31:53.2 for 84th-place. Sophomore Charles Kipchumba also had a PR, 32:03.6, and cracked the top-100 with a 94th-place finish. Seniors Jake Rethman (107th place) and Jonathon Hrivnak (PR time of 33:31.3) rounded out the Rockets' efforts.
