CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Toledo men's tennis team posted six victories in qualifying matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships on Thursday at the University of Illinois. The Rockets combined for a 6-2 record, including undefeated records by junior Adam Kovac, senior Luis Kleinschnitz and senior Krzysztof Wetoszka.

"It was quite a solid first day for us," head coach Al Wermer said. "We love the close three-set wins. We'll need to keep shifting gears up, and I know we can do that."

Adam Kovac won his opening set to DePaul's Sven Moser, lost the second set, but took the third set tiebreaker for his first match win. In the Round of 32, Kovac defeated Marquette's Blake Roegner in a three-set decision to advance in the tournament.

Luis Kleinschnitz won his first set against No.10 seed Noah Becker of Notre Dame, dropped the second set, and captured the tiebreaker set for his first match win..Kleinschnitz advanced another round by defeating UIC's Gustavo Schwebel in two sets (6-3, 6-3).

Both senior Krzysztof Wetoszka and freshman Matias Olivero received an opening-round bye. Wetoszka was matched against Illinois State's Emiliano Gonzalez and swept the match in two sets.

Olivero faced Marquette's Rami Scheetz and won two close sets for the match win.

Vlad Meluta lost his opening match to Cleveland State's Raul Teichmann in two sets.

The main draw of doubles will begin Friday at 8:00 a.m. (CT), followed by the singles main draw final qualifying round. Junior Pawit Sornlaksup and senior Marko Galic prequalified for the singles main draw and will begin competition on Saturday afternoon.
