Toledo Falls to Ohio in Home Opener

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team played its first home game of the season on Friday, falling to Ohio by a score of 13-2 in eight innings.

Toledo scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning, but the Bobcats would go on to score at least one run in the final six innings of Friday's game to claim the series-opening win. The Rockets collected seven hits on the afternoon, two of which came off the bat of Nicky Winterstein. Trace Hatfield had the only extra-base hit of the day for UT, a double in the bottom of the third. Wyatt Jefferson got the start on Friday and threw 2.1 innings, while Jamie Myers, Jordan Power, and Kyle Bischoff saw time out of the bullpen.

The weekend series continues with a seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon. Those games, as well as Sunday's series finale, can be seen locally on BCSN and also streamed live on ESPN3.

How it Happened
  • The Rockets scored in the bottom of the second on a failed pickoff attempt, The throw from pitcher Joe Rock tipped off the glove of the first baseman and allowed John Servello to score from third.
  • The Bobcats scored a run in somewhat similar fashion in the top of the third. The runner on second advanced to third on a passed ball, then came around to score on an errant throw that trickled in to left field.
  • Ohio also scored exactly one run in the top of the fourth, fifth, and sixth with RBI base hits to take a 4-1 lead through six.
  • A two-run double into left field by OU's Trevor Lukkes in the top of the seventh extended the Bobcat lead to 6-1.
  • Marcus Strother's ground ball to shortstop allowed Winterstein to score and cut the Toledo deficit to four, 6-2, in the bottom half of the seventh.
  • Ohio blew the game open with a seven-run top of the eighth, capped with a grand slam off the bat of Isaiah Peterson to make it 13-2. After OU took a double-digit lead, the game was called after the bottom of the eighth due to the NCAA's run rule.
