LEESBURG, Fla. – Toledo endured a long day on its second day of competition at The Spring Games on Saturday, but it was well worth the wait as the Rockets (6-3) posted a 5-4 victory over North Dakota and an 8-0 (5 inn.) blanking of South Dakota.
"It was a long day for us but a really good one," said Head Coach
Joe Abraham after his squad sat through a nearly seven-hour rain delay in its first game. "We were in a bit of a rough spot against North Dakota trailing 2-0 in the first and they had a runner on and no outs before the game was stopped. When play resumed, we put one on the board in the second and that changed the feel of the game."
Senior
Dayna Denner and
Aleah Marra led the Rockets offensively against the Fighting Hawks with three hits apiece. Â Marra's two-run single in the third put Toledo ahead 3-2, and Denner homered in the sixth to provide an insurance run that was needed.
"We hit really well but just kept leaving runners on," Abraham said. "Aleah and Dayna came through with some clutch hits and
Erin Hunt just battled. We played excellent defense behind her and hung on for dear life."
Hunt (4-1) picked up the win for the Rockets, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs in her fifth complete game of the year.
In Toledo's second game of the day vs. the Coyotes, sophomore
McKenna Schmidt (2-0) pitched a two-hit, five-inning shutout. She allowed just two hits and struck out a pair of batters.
Sophomore LF
Leah Munson tallied a team-high three hits to lead the Rockets' nine-hit attack vs. South Dakota.
"I was really proud of how we played in our second game," Abraham said. "We had come off a very stress-filled, emotional game vs. North Dakota and then had to move fields and play right way. McKenna pitched a great game and our defense was really good. We just methodically put one run after another on the board. It could have been a letdown game for us, but we came out really strong."
The Rockets broke through early when junior 2B
Bri Robeson scored on a fielder's choice in the first inning. Toledo then put the game out of each with four runs in the third and three more in the fourth.
Robeson and Munson both singled to lead off the inning and scored on freshman SS
Jenna Kroll's sacrifice fly and Marra's fielder's choice, respectively. Junior C
Raquel Emery added an RBI single to right center for Toledo's final run of the inning.
Denner's RBI double and Marra's RBI single accounted for the Rockets' first two runs in the fourth before junior C
Aubrey Reed came across on the front end of a double steal.
The Rockets will wrap up their weekend at The Spring Games tomorrow with contests vs. Florida Gulf Coast at 12:30 p.m. and New Mexico State at 5:30 p.m.
