Toledo Hosts Buffalo for Final Two Home Matches of 2021

3/18/2021 12:12:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's volleyball team welcomes Buffalo to Savage Arena this weekend for its final two home matches of the season. The Rockets and Bulls will battle on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before facing off on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.

Following the match on Saturday, Toledo will honor five student-athletes during its Senior Day ceremony: Caleigh Barhorst, Chloee Kleespies, Rhyen Neal, Emma Swope, and Elise Wilcox. The Senior Day festivities will be live streamed after the match, and fans can click here to follow along.

Last Time Out
The Rockets hosted Bowling Green on Tuesday and visited Ohio on Wednesday, falling to the Falcons in four sets before losing a five-setter in Athens.

After dropping the first two sets to Bowling Green, the Rockets won a close third set to force a fourth. Toledo kept up with BGSU for much of the fourth frame, but the Falcons eventually pulled away and clinched the match. Taylor Alt had a match-high 21 kills and Ryann Jaqua added 23 digs.

In the five-set defeat against the Bobcats, the Rockets won the first and third sets by identical scores, but after losing the second and fourth sets they were stifled in the fifth frame by Ohio's offensive attack. OU hit .615 in the fifth set to emphatically clinch Wednesday's match. Olivia Vance had a career-high 19 kills for the Rockets.

Quick Hits
  • Toledo ranks atop the MAC in blocks, averaging 2.48/set. Olivia Vance is sixth in the conference in that category (1.08/set).
  • Toledo recorded double-digit blocks in four of its last five matches and has 10-plus blocks in eight contests this season.
  • A few Rockets are having seasons that would rank among the best in program history in their respective categories:
    • Olivia Vance is averaging 1.08 blocks/set, trailing Denise Berg (1994, 1.09 blocks/set) for the school record in blocks per set.
    • Ryann Jaqua is averaging 4.52 digs/set this year, her first as the Rockets' primary libero. That would rank sixth all-time in program history.
    • Taylor Alt is averaging 3.55 kills/set this season, just on the outside of the all-time Top 10 in program history (DeSeana Williams, 1990, 3.58 kills/set).

Scouting Buffalo
The Bulls are 3-14 entering this weekend's series, though they have won their last two matches in three sets, sweeping Northern Illinois at home last Saturday and Akron at home on Tuesday. Buffalo started off the year with a 10-match losing streak, the first eight of which were three-set losses. Opponents are hitting .275 against the Bulls, which ranks last in the MAC. Courtney Okwara is eighth is the conference in hitting (.311) and Monika Simkova is averaging 0.38 service aces/set, fourth in the league.
